Sorry for the second thread of the day (it will be the last!)...

I have a fairly decent bike frame that's been in my shed for years (Cannondale M10) and there's a box of various bits that came off it and some wheels etc. The bottom bracket is not installed. the steering bracket is installed in the frame although the handlebar stem is not. All the gear levels, wires, linkage, derailleurs etc are there too. I also have some Magura hydraulic rim brakes which I'd like to install as well instead of cantilever type things.

I have no idea what to do with push bikes. Is it easier just to pay someone to do it or is it a piece of piss?

Bring it up here to Oundle. I can fix most things but we have a great bike shop and further afield a chap who is a whizz.

Tools are the key to it. If you have the correct tools half the battle is won.

Following a mishap on my bicycle the other day I launched an investigation into what could have gone wrong. A good rule of thumb is not to overtighten bolts even if they are considerable in size. They can snap like a piece of dried spaghetti.

That reminds me. We are having friends around tonight. One who was married to a former international player. Will enjoy good company, France V Italy and some liquid refreshment!

Tick! Absolutely. I fixed a wobbly amplifier with just a soldering iron yesterday.

I was erring very much toward the getting someone else to do it option if I'm honest.

Just so I don't get ripped off, how long would it take a bike mechanic to put a bike together - how much will they likely charge?

Depends.

How deep are your pockets?

You could just ask a local bike shop to install the bottom bracket and headset. If you bought said components from them they'd almost certainly do it for free, as it would take them minutes. The rest is really just allen keys & wire cutters.

Edit - just read the OP properly. Just get them to install the bottom bracket then, the rest is easy.

Double edit - and a BB is easy if you have the right tool, tbh.

Depends.

How deep are your pockets?

I busk on the Victoria line and do tricks for cash in the bogs.

A few decent tools + the Park Tools website & YouTube.

I liked busking. Not good enough these days.

Be careful with the wheels. Its easy to put them on upside down.

Gear is a thing with teeth, not an item of clothing.

Bring your frame and accessories to your LBS (local bike shop) and get them to assemble it. Bottom bracket can be tricky, so leave it to the professionals.
It's quicker and safer, despite the expense.

Buying the specific tools to do that one thing once or maybe twice in your lifetime isn't worth it, imo. BB installation at my local is about the same price as the tool you'd need to do it.

Lots of good youtube videos to help with the rest.


Even if it wasn't perfect, you could always take it in for a 'tune up' which would be much, much cheaper than a full build.

The tools would probably actually cost more than getting a bike shop to do it, even with the cheapest eBay tools. Skills wise, it is very easy.

No need to succumb to Globus's grooming, just take it to your local bike shop.
