That was the state of play when I posted. I'm not saying anything about it apart from the fact SA now have no reviews available to them and an innings can sometimes last a long time.

Are you feeling defensive this morning, Oom?

Not at all, reviews will reset after 80 overs, I think.

Not any more, I think.

They did away with that last year, if I'm not mistaken.
[Edit: sorry, a little slow]

I am surprised that SA went with four bowlers. India got in when the ball went old on slow pitches.

I don't think it is a big scoring wicket and the square looks like it has had a bit of rain on it.

We'll only know once both sides have had a chance to bat. Honours fairly even I think.

Neither attack is going to give away cheap runs. 300 might be a good score first up. It was said in the press that the ground average is about 270.

Keeping the run rate in check now, hopefully force a false shot. AB dropped a very tough chance already...

Act your age please.

LBW shout against Marsh turned down, replay suggested it would have hit leg. Missing those reviews we lost in the first hour.

Lots of people knocking Maharaj, but he just got Smith.

Maharaj to Smith, OUT, oh, someone pass the Kryptonite - Smith is gone! Jubilation among the SA players as umpire Ravi's finger goes up and Smith stalks from the field. Needed a bit of luck but Maharaj has made the breakthrough; Smith was trying to cut, got a thick edge that burst through de Kock's gloves but then ballooned off his thigh for de Villiers to jog up from slip and bag safely. Smith won't convert this time, SA have landed the big one

SPD Smith c de Villiers b Maharaj 56 (155m 114b 11x4 0x6) SR: 49.12

Another one for Maharaj. Game tilting to South Africa now.

Maharaj to Marsh, OUT, stunning bowling! Finds the right area once again, Shaun Marsh feels for the ball, uncertain of the spin, it drifts and bounces, kisses the edge, and South Africa have their fifth!

SE Marsh c de Villiers b Maharaj 40 (132m 96b 6x4 0x6) SR: 41.66

We are not use to see spin so early in SA attack. Gibson thinking out of the box.

Aussie top order not really firing, Bancroft seems to be struggling still and unless our tail can wag somewhat, we are in trouble.

Trouble?

I wouldn't have said so. If you can get to 300 (which should be easily within reach of your tail) then I would anticipate that you will have a lead going in to the second innings. Our batting is remarkably brittle, and ,depending on how well you bowl, I would expect you to have a first innings lead. On recent showings, our top order has contributed very little and it's been left to our lower order to get us out of the hole.

The pitches we used against India were very bowler friendly. More balanced pitches this time.

Valid point.

I'm hoping that Amla, de Villiers and du Plessis (and de Kock) pull their weight this test.

I've heard that there is a lot of indeterminate variable bounce in the pitch which won't help the side batting last.

Yeah, our top order need to pull finger.

Seems like great conditions for bowling this morning, new ball only 4 overs away, let's hope we can clean them up before lunch and then bat on and on and on...
