I don't know which VPNs are the best out there.

It might depend what you want it for as well. Read the Whirlpool forums:
They even have NordVPN thread.

Nord gets some reasonable reviews elsewhere:

https://www.top10vpn.com/best-vpn-for-australia/ (ranked #2)

https://thebestvpn.com/reviews/nordvpn/ (#2)

I use PIA. They seem OK, and cheap.

I use expressvpn.

Does everything you need it to do and rock solid across all OS (have it on Windows, Mac and Ubuntu).

Best

Not good with IOS, don't trust " the best vpn" reviews, most of these sites are paid by the companies, best is to read the latest reviews in the Apple / Android App Stores.
Expressvpn is fine
My friend has a vpn mainly for géo block TV, currently he uses and recommends TunnelBear, ( Canadian, not sure if available in AUS)

Maybe so.

App store reviews are useful. Dunno about "best".

Within an Australian context at least, a knowledgeable online community like Whirpool is where I'd be looking first for locally applicable tech info.

I agree with you, Apps reviews aren't always the best and not technical for sure, but when you have above 20% of the reviewers complaining about the same issues ( disconnections, slow, dishonest etc..) for me it's a red flag.
Saw that TunnelBear is available in AUS, possibility to get 500mb free/month.

Can't speak for Aus but my own personal experience of using VPNs between the US and UK (and periodic trips to other countries):

- Tunnelbear: very user-friendly PC/ iOS/ android app, in a kind of 'my First VPN' way. Easily switchable between a range of different countries, and Hong Kong/ Singapore work for RugbyPass

I've had a few issues though - one time a client update fudged my computer, slowed everything down and had windows firewall block pretty much everything. Customer service response time is maybe 1-2 days. Won't work for Netflix (and seemingly now a lot of hotel, cafe etc wifi providers) who blanket-block dynamic IP ranges used by most VPN providers including Tunnelbear.

- Torguard; recently started using when someone (on here I think) told me about their promo code. Does the (slightly-less) user friendly app with the country switching thing but also has more power user-type functionality. I pay a little extra for a dedicated UK IP which Netflix etc can't block/ doesn't know about to block. But the customer service is ridiculously good - chat service manned 24/7 (by someone in the UK I think) and any service ticket I have submitted has been filled in <5 mins

YMMV of course

Oh, and I see that Tunnelbear just got bought by McAfee, so my opinion of them has instantly dropped a few points

Is that right? My friend just bought a years license for it. It's half decent, but if he's trying to access the BBC to watch rugby, it's not always there (i.e. the BBC knows that it's coming in from a different country and tells him so).

My friend is interested in your 'dedicated UK IP' thing. Will definitely look into that.

Have used PIA which turned to shit so went to NordVPN which is now pretty ordinary too. It seems very hit and miss depending on connections.

I use VPNUnlimited which I got lifetime for US$30. Cheap as hell. It's mostly OK, once I changed a few settings as it was leaking my IP and foreign TV sites in OZ & UK could recognise I was overseas.

It doesn't review well, from what I've seen. But cheap!

I've very rarely had that problem (and have been using Tunnelbear for ~5 years now), though admittedly I don't watch much UK tv now. Just tell your 'friend' to disconnect and reconnect and it'll almost certainly be fine right away if they assign a different IP - the BBC don't seem too fussy about it all. The Sky app, on the other hand, was a right fucking pain in the arse. Maybe it looks at the GPS on your phone/ tablet... even once you get it working it'd periodically drop out.

I've pasted the details below that got me set up with the dedicated IP (I didn't write them, but once you're on the TG website they're easy enough to decipher). I doubt the promo code is still active, but maybe there's another one out there.

What I ended up doing is buying a very cheap Open VPN router (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073T ... UTF8&psc=1) and configuring it with the dedicated IP (details are on the TG store page somewhere) and configured the router so that I just flick a physical switch on the side of it to switch to that IP. My Chromecast is paired with the router, so now I can stream BBC (well, in my case, RugbyPass using a Hong Kong IP) direct to my TV.

Good luck... to your friend!

------------------------------------------
So my own solution "To get Everything on Netflix" was to order Streaming IP (Dedicated IP) from TG (https://tg-vpn.net).

WHY?

+ With 50% lifetime discount, it matches Shared IPs on price.
+ To watch Netflix USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Finland, or Singapore from any country in the world. (My favorites: USA, UK, Canada)
+ To access Geo-blocked sites, such as HBO, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, etc. (I use iPlayer almost every day)
+ To bypass throttling/cap/censorship/surveillance.
+ Since a Dedicated IP can only be accessed from a single device at a time, it's almost impossible for Netflix to pin down. Anyway, if Netflix catches it, another one is promised free of charge.
(Shared IPs, to the contrary, are being used by hundreds, or even thousands of devices simultaneously, and consequently far easier to spot)
HOW?

1) Open https://tg-vpn.net.
2) Order 'Anonymous VPN', or another service.
3) Scroll down until you see 'Regular Dedicated IP', and select 'x1 Streaming IP USA', or another country.
4) Use TGLifetime50 as 'Promotional Code'. The 50% discount will be valid for the life of the account. This promotion is running till the end of 2017.
5) After placing the order, use: https://torguard.net/submitticket.php to send an empty message to 'Sales' with just this "Subject" message: "Requesting NEW Netflix streaming IP @ location X". (Replace location X with: USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, Singapore, or Spain).
Remember to take advantage of the great customer service with every question you may have. That's it.... Good luck!
