f**king outstanding this weekend.

Given the shit that's handed out to refs ... Frequently... Kudos also need to be given.

I can see why some people don't like Barnes (not a fan of all the fellas malarkey or calling a lot of players by their first name) but at least he is very clear. Is now a top referee

Referees not centre of attention this weekend! Why? No Nigel.

A few things missed but that’s being human. Reffing this tournament has been solid.

Not the fault of Nigel, but simply the backlash of fans who don’t know the laws.

The Nigel hate now

Saw some Leinster fans online on Friday slating him, it was only a few years ago he was our 16th man supposedly. People are dickheads

The reffing has been pretty good this year, the only real criticism I've got at the moment is that we've still got noone bothering to police off their feet at the ruck (or if they are it's technical offences and the side in possession collapsing to stop a counter ruck). The exocet clearout gets free reign every match, which makes the whole focus on head and neck injuries a piss take.

"Your arm rode up a bit there and you ended up around his neck, penalty."

"Didn't use enough arm in that tackle, penalty."

"You just charged the prone guy with a 10 yard run up, dived with your arms braced at the side and smashed him head and shoulder first. Since he took the collision well and isn't insensate we're going to play on. Good clearout."

Thought all 3 were great this week.

My only overall negative is how much players are slowing at ruck and how it's become acceptable to keep hands on until the ref bellows at you, but I'm English and I have to blame someone for our failures...

I think that they all are too lax on reffing people going off their feet but continuing to challenge for the ball. Get them up and the games are so much more enjoyable. However, that is a minor gripe and I think they are all having a good year, worldwide.

Barnes was excellent as was Garces, Explained their decisions clearly and were consistent too.

I felt Peyper missed the French flying in the ruck/tackle area off their feet and not supporting their own weight and generally let both defences get away with too much. Far more annoyed with the way England played than Peyper reffed TBH.

On the other hand was very happy with the way Peyper policed the offside line despite the fact that England suffered because of it.

Agreed.

I don't rate Chris Pollock though. He's bloody dreadful.

My only issue with Peyper is that he was at times very forgiving of French tacklers lying in the way which prevented fast cleans.

Nicknamed O'wens, blamed for England's defeat. I'm surprised he wasn't blamed for the defeat in Paris as well

He is suffering from the famous forward pass affair in Nz-France but honestly, other than that, he is a great referee, very fair and not often influencing games which is generally the best attribute for a referee.

My issue was the English players ponderous movement towards a ruck that prevented fast cleans

Of course he's fine. Why it pissed me off people thought Irish teams benefited from him a few years ago, and why Irish fans shouldn't be pissed off now. Swings and roundabouts, refereeing rugby is a difficult thing, people sometimes lose perspective

No-one has blamed the ref for the loss or actually quibbled with any disciplinary decisions against England as far as I have read on here.

England have been bad at adjusting to the way different refs run the game since about 2005 TBH. May's dumb push on the French defender just about summed yesterdays performance up in a nutshell.

I was at a rage with the TJ. The French player was looking over his shoulder weaving left to right

Whatever you do, don't read the match thread  . I know emotions are up on those (I am the worst), but the blame was certainly placed onto the ref for that result.

Consistency is the big issue. There is no point in randomly blowing for a squint feed or other regular style of infringement and then ignoring it for the rest of the game.

I don't think anyone's blaming the refs. But it's pretty clear that in the AP they're reffing the new ruck laws pretty strictly, while at international level it's still "you can get your hands on the ball when you feel like" in pretty much every match.

You're right, though the players should be able to adapt quicker than they have.

Right. Just the way it should be. I couldn't even tell you who reffed over the weekend. Can't really remember blatantly bad reffing during Fra v Eng. As far as I'm concerned, that's that. I couldn't tell you which ref's tendency is what ! Tbh I maintain N.Owens has been involved in some of the worst reffed games I can remember, at many levels too (club or int'l).
