One of the truly great fielders - he changed the way teams/individuals approached fielding and was the 1st 'superstar' out-fielder.

RIP

RIP.

He was amazing at that time. I really admired him.

And 1 669 test match runs at an average of 49.08 isn't too bad either!

Indeed - better than I remembered.

I was early teens when he came on the scene - he had an enormous impact on kids like me; all trying to be Colin Bland in the field - until then fielding was just something you had to suffer while you waited to have a bat or a bowl.

Shame he didn't have a longer test career.

RIP.

I always remember the commentary. "Wait. It's Bland!"

He could throw down the stumps from pretty well anywhere.

Got a link to this news? Shame - definitely set some new benchmarks for fielding, and a pretty excellent batsman as well.

Think Jonty Rhodes, except better.

R.I.P.

Yep, excellent fielder (was worth a heap to have him in the field for you by all accounts) but a bloody annoying batter to try to get out as well evidently.

Sort of guy you want on your side.

It was almost like he invented proper fielding.
He shook thing up even at the lowest levels of cricket, where the batsman's call had always been 'One for the throw'.

The irony of Constantine being forgotten (no fault of Bland's of course)...this thread.
