Jesus christ, he must have damn near snapped his leg off. If Cipriani could come back from that terrible ankle injury you shudder to think what Jones must have done to have forced retirement.

Another article, doesn't 'blame' but the end seems to point toward it being a Gustard idea:

Apparently whilst being done with Judo guys, the exercise they were doing was a typical rugby training exercise, rather than some sort of specialist Judo training.

Someone on the Wasps board (a doctor) suggested that such an injury would potentially be caused by Jones lifting/tripping/throwing Maro, it going wrong (obviously) and the planted foot basically twisting and ripping (maybe Itoje landing on it too?).

Sounded horrific. Poor bugger.

[globus]

I know one of the wasps doctors (a sports medicine consultant) who said it's the worst injury of that type he's ever seen.

He wouldn't go into many details, but said that it was an absolutely freakish accident.

Is it true he was sent to hospital in a taxi?

Freak injuries happen- I was in a kneeling grappling drill and the lock next to me snapped his ankle with his foot pointing the wrong way.

Still think the being sent in a taxi thing isn't necessarily that terrible. Presumably they've got a pretty decent medical setup there, and would have had gas, full leg braces etc. If there's a taxi nearby (or very likely on site), then it's probably going to be much faster than an ambulance.

Not heard that, but I'll ask. If so that's appalling

Gutted for Sam who had delivered at every level below a full cap, even playing v the Lions for the BaaBaas in Hong Kong, and was another of that top quality U20 side that had given England Mako, Launch, Ford, Fazlet, Daly, Yarde (and Wade). Dai had him captaining the AP side at an early age. Really nice guy too.

The accident sound horrendous but freak injuries can occur.
Heard the story of someone playing tennis on the rubber composite courts at Bisham Abbey (a very strange surface to play on) who ripped his ankle ligaments when he turned and his shoe didn't.

Say for some reason they did have the full match day medical staff and doctor there, I’d still expect an ambulance with the flying doctor by car to bring the good drugs.

If they really wanted to use a car for a guy with a dislocated fracture, did nobody in the England set up have a motor rather than sticking him in an Uber?

What was the taxi? Proper London cab would have room for his leg to be straight.

I'd think they'd have all the stuff paramedics would have and probably equal medical knowledge at least. So if he'd got all the treatment possible outside a hospital then get him there as soon as possible rather than wait for an ambulance.

I assume the announcement delay was because of the RFU negotiating a payout to avoid legal action.

It appears that everyone in the squad, except the Wasps and Quins players who were playing a match on that day, was given a safety briefing about the judo session on the Sunday.

Those players arrived in camp late Sunday night, and were put into the judo session first thing Monday, without having been given the safety briefing.

Sam was matched against Itoje, who Saracens had decreed that none of their other players should be matched against.

The rest is history.

It now looks like Sam will be following a career in food journalism. He already blogs on the subject.

Papers when it happened suggests that the injury occurred on Tuesday morning?

That's what I was told by Sam's, late, father.

It's what the latest articles are suggesting too. Just wondered about the discrepancy. The reports of the injury all seem to be from the 5th (the Wednesday).
