I don't think that negative is the right word in this context. We have had ours hopes up high and been let down so many times in the last few years that being sceptical about new [or false] dawns is ok.

Be honest my fellow Bok supporters, and tell us what your thoughts and emotions were at the 25 minute mark.

Because the Stomp players get a free ride, with a lot of the media also being Stomps. We ended up with ridiculous situations, like Slouw's career (what was his record against the ABs in the end?), and Jean de Villiers captaining the side whilst injured and preventing Frans being selected. Then there's Frans Malherbe.

So lets look at the Stomps from the last match:

Bongi Mbonambi.

His performance doesn't surprise me, it'll be in my post history before he was first capped in 2016 that I said he was a hard worker (Rassie has said he's in peak fitness conditioning wise) and would not be weak. This is the type of solid player that makes a provincial side, grinds out everything like a machine. But it seems unlikely he's ever going to have the x-factor to push the best. I've seen Chilliboy outperform Bismarck on occasion, not consistently but it has happened. If the three hookers we go with are Marx/Bismarck/Chilliboy, you have three guys capable of pushing eachother in all areas. But Mbonambi isn't a bad pick, for the Boks I would probably rate him above Akker (who I really like and has been good for the Sharks), because Mbonambi's strengths are in the core skills of his position Akker's not so much. Akker played against Wales and England, Chilliboy only Wales, and Mbonambi only England. I would've had Chilliboy playing both, bench or starting. Given the injuries/non-availability, probably Mbonambi as the other hooker.

Wilco Louw.

Actually seems like he has the potential to be the best. But is an example of how Stomps players are not criticised, compare what is said about him to what is said about Tank. Almost seems like people are pissed at Tank for being good.

Kolisi.

I'll post what I said about backrow after the ABs test last year (it's on the match thread from the 2nd ABs test in 2017):
"In the backrow, Jean-Luc must start. Slouw shouldn't be there, dead weight like Cassiem. Marcell Coetzee must be added when fit. Lots of criticism of Kolisi, but he's improved over the years especially his work rate tackling and linking/support running, I think the issue is he's being told now not to use that and instead stand further out, contest contacts and carry there. Doesn't make much sense as his breakdown work is an area he hasn't worked on much and his carrying is best when taking an offload from a break, he's a lot like a Jacques Botes (lots of tackling/support running/linking/not much breakdown work), I don't think he's as bad as people have said on this thread, I think he's being used wrongly. Backrow for me is Jean-Luc and Marcell as the guaranteed XV selections, Kriel/Kolisi/Duane for the remaining places in the XV, bench, and squad. Du Toit isn't a flank, should have Mostert's lock jersey."

My view hasn't changed. If he's used wrongly, and a coach says "this guy is quick, lets put him further out" it goes wrong because playing wider a backrow has to be ultra strong at the breakdown (as well as fast) for it to work. It's also harder for him to use his speed further out, because it's less likely he's going to take an offload from a tackle (and so get the ball on the break).

It would be odd if he was made captain for this series, then dropped when Whiteley came back. I wouldn't have Whiteley in the squad. If both Kolisi and Whiteley are selected, it puts huge pressure on the blindside at the breakdown. You need at least two of your backrows able to clear players at rucks, and at least one with a strong ground game (and if you want to be the best this needs to be world class).

De Allende

Unbelievable he's still being selected.

Kitshoff

Over hyped, it's totally different coming off the bench in the frontrow compared to starting. But is good. Seems perfect to have Beast starting, and Kitshoff on the bench.

Pieter-Steph du Toit

Potentially world class, should be starting.

Notshe

A lot of hype, very little delivery. Backrow has always been our strongest area, and he's nowhere near in any of the three backrow positions.

I agree that Notshe looked out of his depth yesterday and last week. I like him at the Stormers, looks like he can be an explosive quick supersub-type guy at the Boks but isn't actually doing that. If it was him I saw there, he looked pretty slow tracking back when May scored.

I'm not comparing him to May! I'm saying he (Notshe) just looked slow. Or he wasn't trying hard (even worse).

Very happy for Mbonambi. Seems like a 100% effort guy 100% of the time. And maybe someone who will go even harder if a coach backs him?

Other games will be harder, England aren't used to altitude.

Ox Nche, Jason Jenkins, Kwagga Smith, Nizaam Carr, Travis Ismaiel, Curwin Bosch and Cameron Wright have been released back to their franchises following the opening Test in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, it was also confirmed that prop Trevor Nyakane has been withdrawn from the squad because of injury.

Sard has not only commented on Stomps. He has commented on AE at length, and time is proving him correct. It seems then, that he knows more about centre play than you, and this is your specialist rugby subject.

I see elsewhere you are calling for Beast to be dropped. The same Beast that has been a stand out player the last few seasons, and is in the form of his life.
I called for Beast to get dropped? You're trolling again. I did say that he's doing fine, not great. That's the truth. I have no problem with his selection.

Yes. Only reason I think Kwagga didn't get the nod...well two reasons actually is because 1) he sucked against Wales and 2) he only covers flank whereas Notshe covers flank and 8 if needed and PSDT covers flank as well so no place for Kwagga. Notshe makes too many simple mistakes imo. But yes, JLduP needs to step it up. He, Kolisi, and Duane make a formidable backrow. Duane is just so important to our cause. Whiteley who? Well....unless Duane replaces JLduP to make way for Whiteley. :proud:
Kwagga can play 8 too. He’s a different class to Notshe despite the performance against Wales and should play ahead of him. For all the talk about Notshe over the past couple of seasons - particularly his athleticism - he’s barely produced an eye catching performance for the Stormers. Both Kwagga and Carr are better players.

Willie is crucial at 15 when he’s in this type of form. He creates so much space for those around him. Has been doing it all season for Wasps and is playing with a confidence that he seemed to lose for a couple of seasons. He was getting slated by Wasps supporters last year and has more than won them over this season.
I'd have no problem with Kwagga ahead of Notshe...just wasn't sure on how comfortable he is covering 8, which was why I suggested that might be a reason for him not getting the nod, in addition to the Wales performance.

Jenkins was our only real #4 in the squad but RG had such a storming game that it's a fai call. The only other issue is Wright - this means van Zyl remain the back-up scrummie as Papier is essentially there as an apprentice, developing for 2023

I like it. A squad picked and deservedly there on merit. Yes, we can argue over a few positions based on preferences but that's a good squad. Add in some injured okes like Marx, Eben, Trevor and eventually Willemse or another flyhalf to take over from Jantjies and it just gets stronger.

9 is a major focus for us now. Faf did really well, needs to be consistent and we desperately need a quality backup.

Vermeulen might not even feature at the Rugby Championship, and a lot of that has to do with the expected return of Warren Whiteley.

"With Duane, we want to try a few things and see how we get a long without him," Erasmus explained.

"A guy like Warren will be available, a guy like Malcolm (Marx) will be available, Eben (Etzebeth) will be available, Lizo (Gqoboka) will be available, Coenie Oosthuizen will be available.

"There are a lot of guys who are missing out currently, which is a good time to build some leadership without a guy like Duane.

"We can obviously pull him back and say he has to play, but we want to start building a leadership group."

Meanwhile, Erasmus confirmed that overseas-based duo, scrumhalf Faf de Klerk and fullback Willie le Roux, would both be available for the Rugby Championship

Eish. Have you ever played the game. You expect a flank covering(backtracking nogal) at an angle to catch a wing who is running a straight line in the direction he was initially facing. May would have to be the slowest wing around. That is nitpicking. He tried and saw he was not close enough to tackle.

I think Esterhuizen is a great player and he will get his chance. Maybe needs to work on his distribution but otherwise his other skills are top class. I would not replace DDA with him at this stage.

Where did I dictate : it is just my opinion. | Why would you make changes to a team after one week unless the players are injured or fatigued. How strong England is or isnt has nothing to do with the argument. I agree we must build for the world cup and I am sure Rassie will give Esterhuizen another shot. You could argue that Esterhuizen should have been chosen in the first place and DDA should have played Wales but that is now academic. You KZN okes must take off your provincial blinkers.

Boet, you're implying that Duane doesn't like being sidelined from the leadership group or that somehow Rassie doesn't want him to overshadow the current leadership group or some other kak you're trying to fabricate. Gaan trek a bietjie draad met jou AE poster.

Duane was always doubtful for the RC and the EOYT due to his Japan contract

Duane was hanging around Newlands looking for a contract whilst Wakefield was looking for a way to get rid of creditors.

Sharks should have snapped him up. Probably our most important player for the RWC

I'm not comparing him to May! I'm saying he (Notshe) just looked slow. Or he wasn't trying hard (even worse).

Rassie really did make fantastic picks here (outside of Notshe so far) imo.

de Allende was okay to good but I think Esterhuizen would bring more to the team. But considering the number of fresh low-cap guys in the back line, I understand de Allende being there.

Very happy for Mbonambi. Seems like a 100% effort guy 100% of the time. And maybe someone who will go even harder if a coach backs him?

Try again.
One might assume he would still be tracking back as fast as possible since, you know, he was close to the ball carrier and also assume Jantjies would at least slow May (HAHAHAHAHA) to allow him (Notshe) the chance to make a tackle or involve himself in the next ruck etc.

So basically, either he's slow or didn't try hard enough. Like I said.
(or he absolutely knew Jantjies would be as effective as he was  )

Go look at the video clip below
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0R1adC0IDI

At 4.11 - you will see Notshe covers the inside centre channel first - then passes a number of SA defenders to get out and cover the wide channel - maybe he could have dived for an ankle tap but look at Duane who was much closer and a lot slower and our number 14 who effected no tackle - but no Notsche is the slow one who did not defend and the only one to be critisised. Notsche did very well to cover the ground he did.

Same at 3.40 Kolisi gets blamed for poor defence at the ruck but he had a blocker in front of him initially and Thomas the Tank also reacted slowly. What more Kolisi could have done I dont know but as usual he gets a finger pointed at him.

Not having a go at you in particular but there is a trend to pick out certain players among SA fans.

What is that...7 or 8 metres from the line....DDA should have been able to do something with all that space.

I see your point. Thomas should have put on his superman cape and flown into the tackle.
Cant see any blocker. Poor technique. Went low and just held on. No effort to push him backwards at all.
He just lent over and dotted down.

Regarding Notse...he was burnt for pace...no point posting the pic.

Kolisi was first guard. No excusing that at all.

In other news....
Cape Town - Springbok lock RG Snyman is making a name for himself in a hurry.

He was immense in his Test debut on Saturday as the Boks overturned a 24-3 deficit to beat England 42-39 at Ellis Park, and it hasn't taken long for critics to start comparing him to former Bok legend Victor Matfield.

Snyman's lineout steal in the dying stages of the match came at a time when England were seeking a winning try, while he also set up fellow-debutant Aphiwe Dyantyi for a try.

"It's a big honour and a privilege to play for the Springboks. It's something you dream about growing up. Running out at Ellis Park is a special moment, seeing all those people there to support you. It was a nice match to play," Snyman said on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old credited Duane Vermeulen for calming the team down with a talk under the posts when the Boks had slipped to 24-3.

"The first 20 minutes, I felt like it was never going to end," he said of his debut.

"Playing with guys that have walked the road in a Bok jersey before and have a lot of experience was nice, especially being down after 20 minutes and Duane just having a chat to us.

"You can see that maybe he's been in a situation like that before and he instilled a bit of calmness into the guys."

Snyman has been in superb form for the Bulls in 2018 and he said he was thriving under the mentorship of John Mitchell.

"Mitch doesn't really put a lot of pressure on us," said Snyman.

"He just wants us to have fun on the field and he understands what makes every player good. He just tries to focus on that and I think that's the difference."
Sards is on to something here lads.

The squad is divided. It's Duane vs Kolisi. I'm pretty sure I saw them punching each other at half time, but didn't want to say anything.
