Hard one to call. All I could say at this time is who it's not.

But who would it be? Hard to go past Owen Franks - he's been the cornerstone of the world's best pack for many years now. Doesn't play like a superstar but doesn't get bettered often either.

Purely on scrumming or the whole package?

I'd go Furlong regardless

He got eaten alive by a 23 year old who doesn't have any scrumming chops to his name. Good around the park though; although not as good as Tupou, who also happens to be able to do his main job (scrummaging) exceptionally well.

Furlong should play in the backrow or something. NZ will skin that pretender.

What about the scrum before it. Furlong couldn't run backwards faster than his scrum was traveling. Fortunately for him, the ball squeezed out.

Maybe they can sort it out during the week? Maybe next week, Australia's 4th best, 23 year old LHP won't eat him alive.

Depends on how you weight the various facets of their game. Somewhere out there is probably a monster tighthead that could out-scrummage a rhino but has tits for hands and waddles from ruck to ruck.

I imagine the Georgian's probably have quite a handy TH. Franks and Furlong are at or near the top. The former edging the scrummaging and ruck work, the later better in the loose with ball in hand.

In the SH, Furlong would make a fine backrower, that's for sure.

He'd be a slightly shorter, slightly heavier, much whiter Jordan Taufua. And shite in the lineout.

The best tighthead in the world is probably Tadgh Furlong imo.

The Wallaby scrum getting the better of the Irish on the weekend was great to see, but it's too early to start casting judgements. We'll be in a better position to do that after the series is over.

As for the OP it has to be Big Karl, the Sea Elephant. I think he's a loosehead, but that shouldn't matter.

It’s actually 2 losses, a win and a draw in his last 4 games against the blackness but I believe towny was referring to his scrummaging prowess

Owen Franks is the prop equivalent of Johnny Sexton. Make of that what you will.

Is towny going to have the stamina to keep going at this rate for the whole series?

We're only 1/3 of the way through, I'm a bit worried for him.

If Ireland win a close game with a contentious call this weekend, then he'll be completely reinvigorated.

The pressure is showing, this transparent attempt to deflect the Swarm onto the Kiwis over Furlong is clear evidence he has some doubts about going the distance.

there is a simple reason why Furlong was under pressure and the tighthead side of the scrum buckled at that point ..... namely the fact that henderson got subbed and quinn roux came on.

we'll see what happens next week when Ireland field a proper lock in Toner (with hendo coming on), a proper outside centre in Ringrose, a proper openside in Leavy, a world class 10 in Sexton, plus our first choice front row next week.

if Aus beat our first choice team this Saturday, then Schmidt has problems .... until then, the jury is out.

Furlong's reputation took a proper hammering at the weekend, no doubt about it.

I was actually slightly disappointed with his scrummaging on the Lions tour as well. He held his side up, but was never remotely dominant.

Don't think you can say that at all. Roux is a monster and is usually very good in the scrums.
Whatever about the rest of his play, that's probably his area of greatest strength.

Okay, well someone on the right side of that scrum wears ladies underwear. My bet is actually Sean Cronin; however Furlong is the easiest to slight.
