Chris Jack was awful here. Took the cash was lazy and had a shit attitude. Kris Chesney kept him out of the team , and made him look average. Compared with other kiwi locks like Brad Thorn who were popular with the teams and fans, Chris Jack sadly was a big disappointment
Better value for money than Stephen Donald?

Peter Roussow was awful for Irish esp given his reputation
Daniel Cootzee Rautenbach and Ryan Strudwick wee excellent for Irish. Leguzamon was hot & cold but had the memorable comedy moment
Brits is a wonderful player and comes across as an even better bloke.
Exe Argie winger Cordero reminded me of him as his footwork is similarly superb.

Jacques Burger was immense for Sarries, the absolute head case.

Jaques Burger is a really good shout. Constantly top quality, for a huge amount of seasons for Sarries, not an end of career Swan song.

If only they could find someone like him today.....
He was going to be my suggestion too. From all respects Umaga did a similar thing with Toulon in France - well, after him they spent big but when he was there he reinvigorated the team - and helped increase the gate in all their opponents (in the 2nd dvi I think) home games.

Returning to the OP, I still can't believe that Gopperth suddenly became good.
With due respect to Umaga, Toulon bought quite heavy that year(including George Gregan), so it was hardly a solo mission like Buck .
Umaga was there before all the big name signings, before he went back as coach.

Maybe, but there were plenty of big name signings on the roster the year they won D2 and got promoted.

Way behind Tani Fuga and Andre Vos, let alone Nick Evans...

I could have sworn that it was “to the NH” at one point. Never mind. The sheer magnificence and proximity of Chainsaw Laney should be enough.

And for players only here for a short period I'd rate David Wilson ahead of Harder

ah, Harder was playing when I first started to watch quins, and he was a beast, smashing people left right & centre.

Reihana has to be in there, an absolute legend at Saints. Now skills coach at Bristol I just found out!

Seems like the others have all been mentioned: Mujati, Tonga'uiha, Kruger, Lam, Shelford, Spencer, Lobbe.

Tim Horan, John Smit, Akapusi Qera, Francois Hougaard, Seru Rabeni, Epi Taione and David Lemi are all worth a mention.
