Wins a Pulitzer for his album DAMN.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/16/arts ... -damn.html

I've tried giving it a listen, but just don't see the hype. Have I reached 'out of touch' old man stage of life? Is this a new kind of 'back in my day...' stance when you criticise kids for their taste in music and tell them: "Go listen to some Chuck D, Tupac or Cube! They're real rappers!"

Yeah, I'm the same - just don't see the appeal or why it's lauded so much.

Damn hippety hoppers, get off my lawn.

Guy deserves it. Seriously good album. Some pretty good hip hop around at the moment imo.

I mean, it's nice and all - but the reality is that giving awards for artistic endeavours is intrinsically stupid. And the same applies to giving awards for sporting performances (in fact you could argue that's even stupider). It's a natural thing to do and I'm guilty of buying into the discussion from time to time, but it's still stupid.

Oh FFS.

It's a good album and I like hip-hop generally but the collective jizzing over this album has just been too much.

Rap is in its late, tired, commercialized stage as a genre IMO...genuinely cannot see what new ideas these guys are bringing to the table.

That said, at least they didn't give it to Drake.

A true wordsmith
[Intro: Bēkon]
Is it wickedness?
Is it weakness?
You decide
Are we gonna live or die?

[Verse: Kendrick Lamar]
So I was takin' a walk the other day
And I seen a woman—a blind woman
Pacin' up and down the sidewalk
She seemed to be a bit frustrated
As if she had dropped somethin' and
Havin' a hard time findin' it
So after watchin' her struggle for a while
I decide to go over and lend a helping hand, you know?
"Hello ma'am, can I be of any assistance?
It seems to me that you have lost something
I would like to help you find it."
She replied: "Oh yes, you have lost something
You've lost… your life."

{Gunshot}

[Bridge: Bēkon]
Is it wickedness?
[Verse 1: Kendrick Lamar]
I got, I got, I got, I got—
Loyalty, got royalty inside my DNA
Cocaine quarter piece, got war and peace inside my DNA
I got power, poison, pain and joy inside my DNA
I got hustle though, ambition flow inside my DNA
I was born like this, since one like this, immaculate conception
I transform like this, perform like this, was Yeshua new weapon
I don't contemplate, I meditate, then off your f**king head
This that put-the-kids-to-bed
This that I got, I got, I got, I got—
Realness, I just kill shit ’cause it's in my DNA
I got millions, I got riches buildin' in my DNA
I got dark, I got evil, that rot inside my DNA
I got off, I got troublesome heart inside my DNA
I just win again, then win again like Wimbledon, I serve
Yeah, that’s him again, the sound that engine in is like a bird
You see fireworks and Corvette tire skrrt the boulevard
I know how you work, I know just who you are
See, you's a, you's a, you's a—
Bitch, your hormones prolly switch inside your DNA
Problem is, all that sucker shit inside your DNA
Daddy prolly snitched, heritage inside your DNA
Backbone don't exist, born outside a jellyfish, I gauge
See, my pedigree most definitely don't tolerate the front
Shit I've been through prolly offend you, this is Paula's oldest son
I know murder, conviction
Burners, boosters, burglars, ballers, dead, redemption
Scholars, fathers dead with kids and
I wish I was fed forgiveness
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, soldier’s DNA (soldier’s DNA)
Born inside the beast, my expertise checked out in second grade
When I was 9, on cell, motel, we didn't have nowhere to stay
At 29, I’ve done so well, hit cartwheel in my estate
And I'm gon' shine like I'm supposed to, antisocial extrovert
And excellent mean the extra work
And absentness what the fudge you heard
And pessimists never struck my nerve
And Nazareth gonna plead his case
The reason my power’s here on earth
Salute the truth, when the prophet say

I mean, those are good IMO, provides the sort of light humor and occasional cleverness, provided you get the references, that we've come to expect from the genre; it's just that we've heard it for almost three decades now. We get it, you're a badass...anything else to add?

His big innovation apparently is that sometimes he feels a bit guilty about it.

I'll give it a try when I next have some down time. If it doesn't make my head bop, it isn't any good.

I had a listen of Damn and I didn't get the hype either. My siblings were losing their shit over it however so maybe I'm just too old. I thought it was decent though.

Shabazz Palaces's double release shat all over it.

I find the same about Drake and recent Jay Z releases and the like. Albums raved about seem so average. I generally feel justified as these albums fade from charts and opinion quite quickly suggesting it's all hype and the music press is a doing that thing of good reviews for good access to stars.

I do wonder how much is just marketing and how broad the musical tastes are of people raving about them. I find a lot of friends who are into crap only listen to crap that's on the radio, so are completely slaves to marketing types who tell those stations what to play.

I now know why I keep hearing that annoying tika-tika cymbal loop around school, but I don't find it nearly as catchy as the actual drum beats rappers used to sample (James Brown's actual drummer, I've been told?) back in the day.

I just heard Drake two years ago

Conversely I listened to Ready to Die yesterday and still have Tupac and Nas on high rotation.

Getting olds a bitch.

I do find my friends really into music do seem to be very susceptible to what they are told is good. I wonder how they can listen and not thing "I don't enjoy this really". I can't force myself to enjoy something, yes some tunes have been growers but bland, uncatchy lift music with no distinctive instruments playing and no changes in tone seems to be the way of rap these days.

The thing is I've always had broad musical tastes. Though I have always never tried to like stuff that doesn't grab me. I agree older rap/Hip-Hop used to be so much catchier and fun.

That's his bets tune and it was originally offered to Hear'Say 15 years ago

The song tune is also slightly unoriginal, but I can't place it.

His themes cover alcoholism, depression, racism and humility. To name a few.

Good lyrics, good flow. Great hooks.

Bitch, sit down.

That's what it sounds like to me. Nailed it! :((

Often-angry spoken word poetry. Better than the mumblers, but how about more than a flat vocal range?

Damn is good, but Good Kid Bad City is great. He is a wordsmith and that is missing when Cardi B is now the biggest act in hip-hop. Like real rappers are missing. I recommend Joey Badass or if you like weird mixes Rza and the lead singer of Interpol have an album together called Bankz and Steelez.

G-eazy is the best rapper around atm.
Do you mean Jeezy? As in formerly Young Jeezy? If so then I would say he is one of the best.
