pontifex was claiming that I was hostile to the hipsters/recent arrivals/"gentrification", which I am not, and I was pointing out that if I was hostile then that would mean that I would be hostile against myself as one of the many people who arrived and radically increased rental prices.

I was hardly trying to protect anyone. I was just having a go at Snapper about being a virtue-signalling dumbshit, because it was there. I wouldn't call it paternalistic, maybe oppoprtunistic, or if you want, given that I used a race issue to have a go at someone, maybe cynical.

That thing about commenting on virtue-signalling being itself a form of virtue-signalling is one of the dumbest things I've heard. It's just criticism, unless we're goign to reductio ad absurdum all criticism and all speech to expressions of superiority.
