Ok, in the market for a new set of wheels. .
Never buy new btw as depreciation starts as you drive off the forcourt..

XE, nice car, but.. feels old for me..
XF, was the 5 ltr super, jesusus on a bike, that thing was quick...
Mazza. .. bloody nice, really bloody nice but, 17 mpg..!

Leaning towards a 2nd hand XF, 4Ltr or a 3 ltr diesel.. anyone have experience of one?...

Looks like badge is important to you, but the correct answer in that vehicle type is Passat bi turbo diesel or Skoda superb.

Ah so midlife crisis it is!

The Passat is a stealth machine, not lightning but about 6 seconds 0-60. Lexus GS F also worth a look as is the Alpha (then decid to never buy an Alpha)

(I am really tempted by the Kia Stinger though! )

Can't go wrong with a highly specced Fiesta or a Qashqai

Get a 1.5L Toyota Corolla, 8 years old with about 80,000km on the clock.

Alpha, now there's a thought. .

Needs to be a big engine one though. .

I've already got a little engine screamer, like the v8s, for another car..

Just put a bid on a TVR for the fun..

I always buy new and pay full period and then drive happily free for many years after.

A mate bought a newish Range Rover in the UK for like 17k, was then shocked when his gearbox went and the replacement was about 5k

I do about 40k a year, on my current mx5 at 38mpg, it ramps up, clk is at 28mpg, jag 3 diesel should give me 45mpg..

Then why are you even looking at the Maserati?

Get a newish c class coupe they look beast like an s class coupe, that would be my choice.

Alternatively a 6 series or s class.

I can relate a small bit, my new Ducati has me filling up every couple of days and it says it's giving me 38mpg the last one must have been doing 50+ cause the wallet is feeling it

Friend of mine just bought a new Audi S5 - very impressive inside and out and goes like a bat out of hell - and they hold their value reasonably well.

You won't do 40K a year in an Alpha - at least, not in the same one !!!!! And the depreciation on them is horrific.

For that sort of mileage - the Merc, previously suggested, is probably a good shout - one of the best rides around.

The XF is an absolute bargain purchase.

The thing is, I can borrow my mate's car. It's an AMG. He's quite happy to borrow one of mine, just for a change!

I really do not see the point in having some ridiculously powerful vehicle any more.

It was fun years ago but the roads are so congested that I'm quite happy with a Nissan auto.

They are quite decent. We hired one in Jamaica. Sadly the air con failed and we sweated profusely!

We went to Trenchtown to visit Bob Marley's birthplace. But we had two police cars in front and one behind.

I like the idea of someone else taking the hit on depreciation, but then you risk the previous owner having abused it. I have one neighbour and one friend who always have trouble with their vehicles, and having been driven by them I can see why. Seeing things like that makes me prefer to stick to cars whose history I know.

We are looking at funding cars for our kids just now. We are trying to persuade an 18 year old and a 20 year old that at the budget we have given them they are better off getting a delivery miles 18 reg Hyundai or Kia or some such with a long warranty than a used brand with more street cred. Will they listen?

We went backwards into one on a night rally. In a mini. Thankfully I'd fitted Recaros with steel backs.

My mate, the driver, broke his ankle. I got away scot free. However, I was able to reach behind and touch the tree trunk.

We've gone down mountainsides in Wales. Roll over cages are very important!

We are doing the same Auld Reekie. Bought a Skoda and a Ford S Max for them (since the arrival of twins.)

Had a top of the range Superb as a hire car for a few weeks earlier in the year; can’t say a bad word about it, had all the bells and whistles you could want, very pleasant to drive and reckon it’d make a very practical family car (the boot would be ideal for a serial killer!). Bit of a tank in length though, especially if you’re in and around town and parking is tight.

Yep. You buy it and drive it until it's done. At least 10+ years. Have a little Corsa which I bought my partner in 2004. It's done 250k and I only got her a new one this year.

only bike twats would buy a Meriva in the first place, I agree they are not nice - (petrol only) Zafira is where its at for "MPV usefulness whilst looking like a box and having a Griffon as a badge" competitions

Gm petrol engines buy & large were lovely and reliable, the exact opposite of their diesels I found.

sadly Vauxhall is now dead in the ground image wise and nobody, even me, would now consider getting one because even if they did a good car (and the new astra is lovely), the depreication would kill it financially.
