Chilli Dog Boats

I wouldn't usually start a thread on a particular food, except for the one I did on a 'fry-up' a couple of weeks ago, of course.

But, but, my God are these addictive. I made them over the weekend and since then have made 2 more batches for the family. I think about them in the morning when I wake up and at night as I rest my head on the pillow. They are a bit like the LOTR one ring to rule them all, and I am Gollum. I know its not good for me, but I can't stop eating them. And I am typically not one for typical American fare.

So basically the nastiest bread, with a hole not cut out (to remove some of that nastiness) but pushed in. With the nastiest cheese and a nasty hotdog, heated up with chilli on top. The herbs my not help here.

Yeah that's not doing it for me. My gut reaction is, "gross".

If I was drunk at 3am maybe one of those would be okay, but for dinner on a regular day? Pass.

You get a good chilli cheese dog at Costco but you have to order off menu

They look great.

I've already made chilli this week so I'm not sure I could swing making it again (I always get shit for making it too much, it's a go to meal for me), but perhaps in two weeks time or something!

Chilli must be the most overrated foodstuff in the world.

I've never had one that is any better than meh.

And yes, that does include having it in America.

As an aside, why does Mexican food always seem to have a consistencty that suggests that somebody else has eaten it previously?

The "sausage" and cheese would also have to be replaced.

But my main point was the poncy addition of fresh herbs to a meal that clearly does not want nor benefit from it. Added like some kind of chef just made something good... not a hotdog in a bun with cheese and chilli.

Yes, I used to have that opinion of Mexican food even when I came to the US for a year or two but then foud the proper stuff. I expect you have not had it. They still have the heavier mush but there are so many types of dishes.

- Fresh shrimp tacos, with slices of avocado and salsa, lime and cilantro
- Crab cerviche with slices of avocado and tostadas
- Anything carne asada
- Chapuzon del mar, which is octopus, shrimp, lobster and oyster in a rich spicy(ish) soup - varies a lot

And I am just thinking of 3-4 top of my head, there are many many more.

Despite posting this chili dog boat, it is rare I like this gunk. I eat pretty well and really good authentic Mexican food is towards the top of my list. When in Chicago there were some amazing Mexican restaurants I frequented. Popn is 4M, and roughly split 2M white, 1M black, 1M brown (95% of which are Mexicans). I was very very lucky in ho wnumerous were my choices - some Mex restaurants I could visit every day, others keep a mile away from their traditional slop, and as usual price was often not the indicator.

Oh I understand that you get bored of foreign food and yearn for some West European junk.... but this really is junk and my point was the stupid herbs. Or 'Erbs as the "chef" probably pronounces it.

Con carne means with meat. Frijoles is with beans.

For what the us refers to as chilli anyway.

They are ok cut up small to provide flavour. Here they are grilled or maybe pan fried and chucked on every dish as an extra. I try and eat a bit, as you know I am very health conscious but they get a bit much

Agree with your first two points, but I'd take an American hotdog over anything I've had at rugby clubs / seen in the grocery stories in England, Australia and New Zealand any day.

I was immediately turned off by the bun. I bake bread regularly and can't even fathom how one can make it so shit.

On a semi-related topic, was in Oslo earlier this week and the "lompers" there are a rather excellent bread replacement for hotdogs. Basically a tortilla/wrap/flatbread but made out of potato.

I must say, I do like Mexican food , and prefer it to Indian food.
I enjoyed the commercial slop in USA and cancun, but then I went off piste and went where the locals really went - oh boy , different class.

What are those veggy maize puffy pancake things filled with other veg? Could have fish ones as well.
