England quite good with a B Team against Costa Rica who put us out of the last world cup.

I have kept seeing this both before and after the game and it's completely wrong. England were far worse than that, they were already out by the time the two teams played (and England proceeded to avoid defeat for their best result of the tournament).

Although as Costa Ricas first two results and the schedule meant that England couldn't qualify you could argue that they eliminated England more so than Italy and Uruguay.

As I am in my early 50s, I remember a good number of WCs. As far back as Argentina, which was one of my favourites. ITV had its iconic World Cup music and the tickertape was not something you witnessed in the UK.

Sepp Blatter the corrupt old mongrel, will attend the world cup at the invitation of Pootin. Obviously going to collect!

May they both get antibiotic resistant gonorrhea.

Yep. Nice and early.

The England Football team visited an orphanage in Russia today!

I like this bit:

Here’s more on the news that Canada, USA and Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup. Fifa might want to change the order of the three nations before they come up with an acronym for the tournament.

HEY !
fudge right off, I did that joke years ago when I first started going there, was even a pic of me in my Lions shirt in 09 there with CMM - everyone then was all 'tut, that's not funny, how yeeb' etc (tbf that was back when women used to post here)

:x

(tbf my wife still doesn't find it amusing when we are in Galleria or Gateway malls and I give her a nudge and say 'are you enjoying CUM ?)

quite telling that one of the richest soccer unions is no match (financially or prestige wise) for the biggest club,

i'd guess the top 4-5 CL clubs would win the world cup handily

There are a few teams I want to do well for many reasons:

Croatia: Big community in Dublin and make match atmosphere in Fibbers brilliant
Poland: Also make match day in Fibbers brilliant.
Argentina: My second favourite team after Ireland mainly due to my county's emigration connection with Argentina and England's sheer hatred of them.
Germany: Self explanatory. They do play nice football as well.

Well there's more than that. There have always been issues in the Spanish camp around the Madrid/Barca rivalry (one of the reasons Raul was binned off for example) and having the national coach take over at Madrid the day the tournament finishes is not a good look given how powerful player power has been. Would he drop an under-performing Madrid player or promote one over a better player? Probably not but that wouldn't stop the rumour mill if decisions could be read that way.

I'm going all in for Nigeria because I know some of my mates will explode if they do half decent.

I hope Belgium lose every game.

I see former Madrid captain Fernando Hiero has taken over. Would the same dynamic not play out with him in charge?

No current connection to Madrid which I think is the main issue. Lopetegui played for both Madrid and Barca and had previously coached Madrid B so that wasn't the issue.

The Spanish FA are saying it is because he broke contract with no consultation but there is certainly an element of optics about it.

Seems weird.

Good luck to all the new teams at the world cup though. :)
