The head coach told him to do it to knobble the oppo quarterback and he refused twice, then followed orders the third time

Wow, that’s actually true.

If he’s paralysed by this, thats terrible. surely it’s only a matter of time malicious acts like this end up with convictions and sentences.

What a principled fellow...

Seriously though the coach/university should be sued for all they have.

Looks more like a High School game. Regardless, coach should be toasted.

The coach is still not fully taking responsibility. He needs to have his coaching license revoked.

It is a university match between Kansai Gakuen and Nihon Daigaku and yes, the coach should be grilled.

Whilst I agree with your sentiments 100%, it could also set a dangerous precedent.

A lawyer could play the malicious/mens rea card and get a conviction for just about anything even remotely dangerous happening on a sports field; it could end up even when someone is not seriously injured.

Are there any "tackle" rules in American football? I thought it was anything goes anywhere, everywhere, anytime, every time.

Not really because there's a range of things that are supposed to happen on a rugby field. The laws of the game determine it first, and the judge will also assess what can and cannot be assumed to happen at a rugby game. And finally there's the 3rd assesment of volntary or not.

When Rougerie sued Phil Greening the judge received the claim because being elbowed in the windpipe not by accident is not in the range of things that can be assumed to happen on a rugby field.

head coach should be charged with incitement to violence

What was so bad about that tackle apart from very late ? Wasn’t on his neck or anything, have plenty of tackles like this especially on a training pitch where you just smash someone ‘for a laugh’ (I don’t condone it, but have seen it)

Can't lead with your helmet is about it. The rest are rules on who you can block and how. QB is very off limits as soon as he releases the ball.

Kickers and punters as well.

I am assuming that the rules have changed since the old days as the hits going in on quarterbacks on the episodes of America's Game set back in the day are absolute carnage.

For sure, they are worth so much money now there is a lot more done to protect them. If they run they are the only ones who can slide feet first and you can't touch them.

There’s more than that. Can’t hit a defenceless player. No horse collars, no tackles to the head / facecage (also includes hair).

And no one took out the offender after the first off ball tackle? Are QBs hated that much?

You're going to need somebody tackling with knives strapped to their arms to beat Hopoate's late, at speed flying elbow to the head:

Was always going to be hard to top his "finger up the butthole" offense, but credit to the man, he actually managed it.

Update:

After several press conferences and an investigation by the university sports council, the head and assistant coach have lost their coaching licenses for life, while the player who made the tackle and the team have been barred from any official matches for one season.

The father of the injured player is pushing ahead with charges against the coaches. He is a former city councillor and a practicing doctor, so he has connections and money.
