Don't think anyone ever considered him a quota player, but he is certainly a quota commentator.

what a childish act.

couldn't take a bit of ribbing and then accused the others on the panel of being apartheid players. Said he always had to defend himself against being labeled a quota and then walked out like a 4 yr old child would.

WTF. Seriously. Missed this. Did they call him a quota?

My brother and I watched it a couple of times now and still can't figure out what caused his outburst.

Would like to hear the explanation.

Most certainly wasn't necessary for the race card being played. Nor the reference to Nick and Naas having played during the apartheid years.

Might be some serious repercussions for him unless there's a very very good explanation from Ashwin.

<Edit> Even the (black) female presenter looked surprised.

Can only imagine that it was the final straw, Naas said that post game was Ashwin's job, but that was a clear joke.

Seems the dude has a serious chip. I don't think he adds any value as a commentator/panelist/analyst - maybe he is better in Afrikaans, but his English is not good nor his analysis. Brenton is better.

Just seen the clip

What an absolute cnut of the highest order.

I never liked him. He always struggled to communicate with someone like Mallet who is much more of an intellectual than him.

At least have the balls to argue with them. To accuse them of "playing during apartheid" - whatever that's supposed to mean - is just ridiculous. That's his broadcasting career over.

Must have been something off camera, although he said he was glad it happened on air, if what we saw was all it took, then the dude has some mental health issues. As you say, even the woman was shocked.

Hopefully his and not theirs, but racial sensitivity in SA could well mean the end of Mallet and Botha on the panel...they can always bring Peter Div and AC as replacements.

If they get rid of Mallet then they might as well just stop with post and pre match commentary, as he's the only guy who calls it as it is. The rest of them just toe the line. It's that sort of attitude that killed shows like Boots and All.

This is the earlier footage before his walkout speech.
A little bit of tension there.

There was another incudent in June 2016 after the 2nd test against Ireland.

Not sure if that played a role as well.

I have no doubt he'll be hailed as a hero by "woke Twitter"

It seems a good example of where South Africa is. Instead of making a coherent argument against someone you disagree with, you clumsily play the race card and walk away.

Still, something had to have happened during the game before Naas's patronising display.

I for one fully support Ashwin in his endeavours to leave the rugby pundit world in a manner befitting his character.

Naas was being very patronising here and Ashwin was already pissed off, but still this must have been about "discussions" earlier

So the two White guys sit on their chairs like fat cats and the Quota stands and does what they tell him to do and tells them how he feels?

Jesus, first time I’ve seen that show and I’m appalled! :uhoh:

Look at the video. His whole attitude is patronising.

But as I said, something happened before this, off camera during the game

The attack on Mallett is particularly shit. He is English speaking, so not an "insider" in his day. He got two caps, and fell out with selectors in a serious way. The teams he played in weren't "segregated" as he stands accused of, Errol Tobias played both tests. Then he was never selected again and went to play in France and Italy for almost all of the 1980s and early 1990s (unlike today, that meant he lost money). There was also a period when he was at Oxford Uni and played for them. Rough to criticise guys like this, you weren't in their shoes and do not know what you would've done.

He'll have to go now of course, his crime is having an opinion whilst being white. I've wondered how long white commentators are gong to be able to criticise black players, and from what we've got that's the explanation here.

Sorry Jens but that I don't buy. You are referring to the part where Naas says he had all if his say earlier so now it is Ashwin's turn.

If that has set Ashwin of then I'd suggest Ashwin has the problem.

I'm not even sure it's something that was said off air because Ashwin clearly says that people saw what happened is live on air.

So he can only refer to what Naas says. In which case I think Ashwin's reaction is over the top.

I just did.

Pretty obvious what happened, white big mouths who have a lot of opinions, criticised a black player/s. Ashwin said they were apartheid blah blah. White guys will have to be sacked.

Acting like English speakers were the 'in' crowd during those years...

What a pathetic tantrum. At least have the argument man to man, in private.

All I'm saying is that we are seeing the tailend on the issue. Something happened before this and Naas is patronising Ashwin.

you don't see it that way? Fine
