Extremely sad, a massive fan of his work.

American Pastoral is a personal fav.

RIP

(…and greater than Robert Zimmerman, but the game's over and I don't argue with referees.)

RIP

American Pastoral is a remarkable novel, a favourite of mine as well.

He was far from perfect (The Great American Novel was anything but), and the unpleasantness of some of his heroes is an insurmountable barrier for some readers, but American Pastoral, The Human Stain and The Plot Against America are beautifully written.

:( 'Sabbath's Theater' is my favourite Roth novel.

Disturbing, visceral, hilarious and filthy; adjectives I look out for in every book review.

The Human Stain was my intro to Roth and turned me off despite being wonderfully written as it was fundamentally predictable. Think I had built up my expectations too high.

After a few years have his other works a go and changed my mind totally.

Fantastic author. I don’t read much fiction anymore but when I did he was one of my favourites. As has been discussed American Pastoral is a wonderful book. RIP.
