That statement in full

Quote:
Joint Statement of President Donald J Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong-un of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea at the Singapore Summit

President Donald J Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong-un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a first, historic summit in Singapore on June 12, 2018.

President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth and sincere exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new US-DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK, and Chairman Kim Jong-un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

Convinced that the establishment of a new US-DPRK relations will contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Korean peninsula and of the world, and recognizing that the mutual confidence-building can promote the denuclearization of the Korean Prenisinulsa, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un start the following:

1 The US and the DPRK commit to establish new US-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two counties for peace and prosperity

2 The US and DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula

3 Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula

4 The US and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

Having acknowledged that the US-DPRK simmit - the first in history - was an epochal event of great significance and overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two counties and for the opening up of a new future, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un commit to implement the stipulations in this joint statement fully and expediently. The US and the DPRK commit to hold follow-on negotiations led by the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and relevant high-level DPRK official, at the earliest possible date, to implement the outcomes of the US-DPRK summit.

President Donald J Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong-un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have committed to cooperate for the development of new US-DPRK relations and for the promotion of peace, prosperity, and security of the Korean Peninsula and of the world.

I can't see a comment in this agreement regarding the repatriation of those Japanese and South Koreans abducted by North Korea.

The Japanese will not be happy.

FFS. So many people parroting statements like this.

I don't like Trump. But previous tactics with NK have gone no where. He is doing something different. People are excited, there is hope.

Don't let your hate cloud everything. Thats what idiots do.

Do you think that Kim is going to start treating the people of North Korea better?

I did not say this agreement is bad but do you actually believe Kim is going to change?

There is nothing about returning the abductees, something that was central for Japan.

Probably not. But its worth a try, if nothing else. Regardless, other options have achieved nothing much. Maybe with a little honey, change can happen over a span of years.

yup - adding legitimacy to the Kim dynasty is the way to go, its better to speak to these people than alienate them ....just like Iran and Palestine.

Kim has had his meeting and press conference with a US President - something neither he or his old man had managed to do before.

In return, he's given up less than NK have previously "committed" to give up before.

Just how low on foreign currency reserves are the DPRK....... I reckon they are close to scraping the bottom of the barrel as many of their off shore enterprises are being compromised.

I agree with you. WTF are people talking about? He's won legitimacy? He won the PR battle? WTF does that even mean? I'll tell you what it means: nothing.

If it comes to nothing nobody has lost anything. If it comes to something then that will be good. The critical rhetoric round this is utterly bizarre.

It's probably a good thing once Trump doesn't actually think NK will denuclearise. It is a bit appeasementy but in the grand scheme of things we'll all feel a bit safer.

win win scenario for all really, US gets to be policeman again and stop nukes, N Korea gets access to economic boosts in return.

Gross oversimplification but the political reality is that Obama would have been excoriated by elements of the press and congress if he sat down with Kim. Trump can carry those elements while also allowing others to later denigrate the significance of the engagement and diminish any legitimacy bestowed if it doesn’t develop as desired. Potentially Trump is exactly the right tool for the job at present.

Even Nixon had China. Though it's all still quite likely it'll collapse in one ridiculous mess, at least he got the nice pictures though.

No he's not. Previously signed agreements are pretty much worded the same; they're repeating the same shit. The difference is that Kim just got NK an audience with POTUS; this is what you get when you have a nuclear weapon programme and long-enough range missiles.

When detail of the document signed by Mr Trump and Mr Kim became known – including that Pyongyang had committed to “work toward complete denuclearisation” of the peninsula – Mr McFaul added: “It means our negotiators achieved nothing new – not one new concession in exchange for legitimation [sic] of North Korean dictator.”

Yeah this.

Also "complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula" gives both sides a convenient out.

Trump does, seeing how he effectively committed Japan to sharing the cost of de-nuclearisation.

Oh come on! :uhoh:

Other than DPRK coming to the table, what has his administration achieved?
He's managed to roundly piss off all the US allies and trading partners. He's failed entirely with some of his more headline campaign promises (Wall, Obamacare). He's been dogged by allegations of links with Russian diplomats. His White House staff seems to have a revolving door hiring policy. Obama managed to make some progress in bringing Iran in from the cold, but Trump's torn that up because his entire mission statement can be described as "Undo any Obama achievements". Communicates primarily via Twitter in messages that a child would be embarrassed to write. There are countless examples of him being an utterly vain, ignorant dickhead with no social grace or diplomacy. He seems incapable of getting his head around the concept of mutually beneficial agreements and only like to strike deals where he's seen as the winner.

Yet he's already achieved more than Obama did in two terms?

hey I didn't say everything he did was good, just that he did stuff

Obama did what, give same sex marriage the go ahead, Pan asia trade (which DT says was awful), and got a bit cosy with Cuba. Not much done for 8 years really tbf
Obama is a yank version of Gordon Brown or Jim Callahan, won't be remembered for much apart from being a black muslim. (I know he's not a muslim, but plenty think he is just because of what his name sounds like)

Clinton stopped/slowed NK nuclear progress until Bush dumped the agreement and showed NK the US could not be trusted to keep its word. NK will not have forgotten, they will not get rid of nukes.
