said it another thread, bring in an orange (or whatever colour you like) for infringements that aren't as straight forward, player goes off for 10, TMO reviews and makes the call if its' worthy of yellow or red.

This is by far the best idea I have heard - the player on the orange card effectively has a judiciary during their 10 minutes in the sinbin. If it looks deliberate/premeditated thuggery then he doesn't go back on and it is upgraded to a red. If it looks accidental/harsh/wrong then let them go back on after the 10 minutes.

This might work. Good idea for an ELV somewhere?

As someone else mentioned, there are several significant flies in the ointment.

George Ayoub, for one.

How a deeply average Sydney club referee got to TMO at this level is still a mystery. I take it Paddy O'Brien was the refs boss who first appointed him. If so, enough said.

Well not really, someone in Aussie had to elevate him to a position where he got to ref international games. IIRC, it was his brainfarts out in the middle that saw him shuffled off to the TMO's box. He must have had something on someone in a position of power. Some of the other TMO's should not be overlooked, a NZ one come to mind. Which is why a orange card with an off-filed citing makes sense, it takes away the immediacy, introduces the chance of some reflection.

Ayoub barely refereed at Super Rugby level.

I am not in favour of the orange card as suspensions are lenient or not handled out at all. It also leaves foul play adjudication in the hands of lawyers and committees.

Then you have suspensions halved based on good behaviour on record and in the hearing so the punishment doesn't fit the crime. Sanzaar reduced Higginbotham's ban based on good behaviour even though he had previous bans. Cian Healy escaped suspension as his lawyer found a loop hole.

The CJ Stander (Ireland won despite the red) and Seán O'Brien cases both were farcical drawn out affairs. Both cases went for about three days. Teams would rather know that these players were out or not in the space of a few hours not days so they can move forward to prepare for the next match.

George Ayoub became an international referee in 2002 which was before Paddy OBriens reign as referees boss began in 2005.

He did however become a specialist TMO under OBrien in 2008 after initially retiring in 2007.

How about 20 minutes and minimum 5 game ban?

Lets see if there is any desire to change the punishment during matches.

Why not? It's to avoid the RED which is a game killer.
