In what appeared to be a further sign of deteriorating relations between the two countries, a verified Twitter account, which is reportedly linked to Saudi authorities, shared an image of a plane flying towards Toronto's famed CN Tower.

The image was overlaid with text, including a quote which read "he who with what doesn't concern him finds what doesn't please him".

I expect Canada to be typically chilled about not being able to fly to Saudi.

Considering Saudi involvement in 9/11, and the story that there was some Saudi govt involvement in it, that image of a plane flying into a tower from a govt website is a bit OTT.

Scumbags the whole lot of them.

The pic in the OP, full colour Canadian aircraft aimed at a tall Canadian building... it's about as subtle as... well, a plane being flown into a tall building.

The western relationship with the Saudi's always stuns me. The Saudi's basically are responsibly for funding most major terrorist groups that attack the wets or force western intervention and the spread of a sychotic version of Islam that is sending the world back centuries but nobody tells them to fcuk off, instread we pay them billions in oil money to fund this evil sh!t and go and freeze out every other country we could buy oil from. Not justifying Russia, Iran and the like but they seem like much lesser evils to me.

Since 1982, the Saudis have withheld their well data and any detailed data on their reserves, giving outside experts no way to verify Saudi claims regarding the overall size of their reserves and output. This has caused some to question the current state of their oil fields. In a 2004 study, Matthew Simmons analyzed 200 technical papers on Saudi reserves by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and concluded that Saudi Arabia's oil production faced near term decline, and that it would not be able to consistently produce more than 2004 levels, when production of crude oil and lease condensate averaged 9.10 million barrels per day. Simmons also argued that the Saudis may have irretrievably damaged their large oil fields by over-pumping salt water into the fields in an effort to maintain the fields' pressure and boost short-term oil extraction. He concluded (in 2004): "In 2-3 years we will have conclusive evidence that Saudi oil is peaking,"[14] Since his prediction, Saudi crude oil production has varied from as low as 8.25 million barrels per day (average for 2009) up to 9.83 million barrels per day (average for 2012). Overall, in the nine years since his 2004 prediction (2005-2013), Saudi crude oil and lease condensate production has averaged 9.20 million barrels per day, just slightly higher than 2004 levels.[15]

Diplomatic cables leaked during the United States diplomatic cables leak in 2011 revealed that Sadad Ibrahim Al Husseini, former vice president of Saudi Arabia's oil monopoly Saudi Aramco, warned the US that the oil reserves in Saudi Arabia might in fact be 40% (300 billion barrels) lower than claim

I totally agree.

I am pro trade pro arms industry, but honestly think it would have been better for everyone to get UN to invade saudi and divi up the country and its oil . The allies should have done this straight after ww2 instead of being obsessed about USSR.

They also hate Iran and let the US park significant amount of military equipment in KSA. There's a huge tactical element to keeping cosy with the Saudis, utterly distasteful as their leadership may be.

Well I would imagine that turning the taps on will have a negative affect on Canadian oil producers, I understand it's more expensive to produce from oil sands and shale which is where the majority of Canadian oil comes from. And oil is a industry which knows how to throw it's weight around. I would also imagine that Canadian arms sales will be hit, a not insignificant amount. Then there's the loss of income from Saudi students, the stopping of intelligence sharing which may prevent terrorist attacks and the well being of Canadian troops abroad (although that's unlikely).

Our generals would rightly throw a fit and start throwing chairs if their pilots were to fly foreign-maintained aircraft in combat.

I worked one summer at a place that did all the aircraft maintenance/repair for Navy and Marine Corps aircraft. The Egyptians used to use our F-4's until the early 2000s, but they'd get flown back for rebuild every so often (sand gets everywhere, requires a lot of attention in machinery). Turns out the Egyptian pilots had itchy trigger fingers on using the ejection seat, so the Egyptians more or less nailed the ejection seat down to make it useless.

Pilot that flew the plane was told afterward "uh, this is what they did" and was pretty pissed.

The Saudis pretty much ignored most OPEC members and turned the taps on a few years back to combat north American shale gas and as a f*ck you to Iran who were about to have sanctions lifted. While $27 barrels of oil were pretty painful for the industry and screwed over petrodollar countries like Nigeria, Angola and Venezuela the end result was forced innovation and R&D by the fracking and shale gas operators who managed in a very short space of time to reduce their lift cost to the point where it was comparable and in some cases more competitive then traditional crude/gas recovery. Not quite the outcome the Saudis wanted and on top of that they pissed through a large chunk of their sovereign wealth fund.

Oil reserves in Saudi Arabia
That shows total reserves of 268 Billion Barrels which is 80 - 90 years of production.
Plus maybe another 30 years worth still to be proven.
Even if over-stated by 40%, that's still an awful lot of Oil, Petro-Dollars and String-pulling in Washington.
