Good to see a young lad with the right academic approach in this field. Although I agree with his dad, he must be crazy !!

Coaching bug has bitten Heyneke Meyer's son

Cape Town - Vic Meyer, the son of former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer, is following in his dad’s footsteps by pursuing a coaching career.

According to the Varsity Cup’s official website, the 21-year-old has called time on his own playing ambitions following a back injury.

He played as a loose forward for the Blue Bulls' under-19 side in the 2016 season.

"To be honest, I have been dealing with injuries since my school days and have missed out on quite a bit of rugby. I love this game but it was getting to the point where I was putting my body on the line week in and week out for very little in return. The frustration was just not enjoyable anymore," Vic said.

Vict, who is also a BComm Human Resource Management student, was given a coaching opportunity at his former school, Affies in Pretoria.

He coached Affies’ under-15 A side before Tuks Rugby came knocking with an offer to coach the one of their new teams, the Academy Old Boys (AOB), who play in the university's Res Rugby League.

"Affies reached out and offered a coaching position within their rugby structures in 2017 while I was out injured which set the platform for Tuks Rugby to give me a shot with AOB," he said.

The youngster added that his father was initially reluctant to approve of his intended career path.

"My dad told me that I was crazy to take up coaching as it is such an unforgiving environment but as soon as he saw how determined I was to make a success of it, he became my biggest supporter,” Vic said.

Heyneke Meyer coached the Springboks between 2012 and 2015.

During his tenure the Boks played 48 Tests, winning 32, losing 14 with two draws (67% win record).

He currently coaches French Top 14 outfit Stade Francais.
