those first few 'it will be alright on the night' telly progs were pretty good tbh, its just a shame after a while all the good clips like Anthea Turner getting set on fire or when the Monkey started jizzing on Valerie Singleton's leg got used up, and ended up with lame 'Carol Voderman had a hiccup, my how heeelarious' type stuff.

RIP Denis. He has followed his mate Frank Muir, plus a whole load of other comedy writers, including Eric Sykes and "Professor" Jimmy Edwards.

Probably most famous for "It'll Be All Right On The Night". I always got worried about that being mentioned in rehearsals!

I wrote a few bits. Possibly the worst was in the days of Fyffes bananas. Cannibals. "When they're feeling sad and blue, they unzip a bwana".

Not my finest hour!

Indeed not. Was that before or after the Goon Show scripts and your one-liners for Humphrey Lyttleton on I'm Sorry I haven't a Clue?

I recognised the name in the thread title right away & thought 'BBC' before opening the thread but couldn't get much further than that. The link answered my question re context, namely My Word, with Frank Muir and Denis etc.

I used to listen to that on ABC radio here in Straya back when I were but a lad and greatly relished it. Long, discursive tales of the shaggy dog story type culminating in enjoyably dreadful punchlines.

The one episode I recall relatively clearly tasked Muir & Norden with explaining the quote 'Stolen looks are nice in chapels', which they transmuted into 'Stall in Luxor, nice inch apples'.

Leaving aside the fact I'd all but forgotten Dennis Norden, I surprised and impressed he'd lasted until ...well, now more-or-less.

And you're on the money as regards him being an interesting bloke.
