You want to hire non-PR posters then?

Okay, so here’s what I don’t understand - how come the bored is now stable and no whiteouts? (Cue - inevitable whiteouts) 🤦🏻‍♂️

If the issue is space taken up on the server, how come it’s not an issue ALL the time?

Good question.

Why is it also that this doesn't happen on numerous other forums?

Because admin. Even “full” servers can run ok if you nanny them. No-one cares about our kit.

Pretty pleased with my guess at 16GB then - only 35% off, and in the right direction (over-estimating).

We all know that refuge forums don't work - too many don't migrate, new modding arrangements don't work, no new blood, the culture becomes completely different, and eventually the poor sod hosting it for free loses interest / runs out of time to keep it going and it dies on its arse.

Have PR towers considered a straightforward out source arrangement? Surely there are Software as a Service options for running forums out there that would take away all the techie hassle for a fraction of the price of hiring and running your own whilst still giving Jake & the mods full administrative control?

Again, I’ll raise with Jake and the powers that be - what will come of it...🤷‍♂️

Maybe it’s all faked to drive up clicks or ad revenue?

Committing the cardinal sin of diagnosing from a safe distance, but it seems more likely to me that it's a resource leak (memory, file handles, database connections, whatever). Which is then fixed by a restart.

Perhaps a cron job to restart everything every fortnight or whatever would be enough?

(I'd be getting so pissed off if I were the technical person reading this who has already thought of all these things and has excellent reasons for not having done them...)

I’d agree normally. But it’s off the shelf software and less likely to suffer from memory leaks as it would be wide spread.

My gut feeling is that it’s a background job on the server, run by an IT process. Database indexing on some other maintenance job which blocks resources/tables/...

But having said that. I’m certain large threads contribute to it. As it needs read all posts and calc how many pages on the fly as people hit the main page.

As I said ... delete the Irish.

phpbb might be off the shelf but a) it's incredibly old and b) it's a total dog.

What is the alternative? Is there something they might implement, but with little effort/cost? Most of the time the forum works - doesn't that mean it is bs that this week's issue is capacity, when the same symptom occurred earlier?

Happy to see all Ragg's posts re Owen Farrell canned in the interest of server space and allowing being forgotten

There's lots of alternatives but none of them will be implemented. The reality is we're a dead forum being allowed to continue under sufferance.

All MungoMan's work. Credit where it's due.

Time to junk the old threads.

The "white screen of death" is also common with this version of phpbb.

One thing I would say, the new Ed kind of sees the value in the forum more so than before.

I can't imagine the sort of Ed who couldn't see the value in real time grass roots feed back about a site's subject matter, even accompanied by a cloud of irrelevancies.

The Trump thread should go. Terrible thread giving bad press to the forum.

It's sort amazing in a morbid way to so obviously see that any sort or even mildly pro-Corbyn post just triggers him and he's utterly convinced it's world ending. It's like a version of Joe Pesci's character in Goodfellas, just ready to be triggered at any moment, except no one will pussy foot around him here.
