The Irishman (2019)

OK, Martin Scorsese directing De Niro, Pacino, Pesci and Keitel in a film about a crime family. That's all I need to know.

Pacino has never been directed by Scorsese. Pesci has not worked with Scorsese or De Niro since the 1990's and it apparently took years to convince him out of semi-retirement. Keitel rounds off the excellence nicely. It might be the last great project they all do.

i'm not feeling it
what was the last good movie either de niro or pacino starred in ?
and the last decent scorsese movie ? wolf of wall street was funny but that' it; didn't rate the departed
a project 30 years too late

This. I can’t see it delivering. Who’s the youngest of that lot?

It’ll be a good movie. It won’t approach Goodfellas or Casino.

Should be good. Maybe they're doing the Departed by from a different angle. Pesci doesn't do it for me buy Pacino/De Nero are always good.

Both Wolf of Wall Street and The Departed where excellent films. IMO Scorsese has been in very good form in recent years. Sure I'd love all involved to be at their peak era's but I think all will up their games for Martin.

It’s a Netflix production .... mightn’t ever be released in the cinemas

Looks interesting but I’ll believe the digital de-aging when I see it

Since about 1990 De Niro just makes funny faces. Pesci was the standout in Casino and Goodfellas.

In a gangster movie Pesci knew what the character was, he grew up with them.

De Niro was superb in Goodfellas though. He's utterly convincing as he gets more and more paranoid and intense about the robbery and then if Jimmy will snitch on him when he speak to Karen. De Niro was also excellent in other 90's stuff like Cape Fear, Mad Dog and Glory, Jackie Brown and a few others. However I'm the first to agree post 90's was far from his best but I felt he never got the great roles he used to.

Agree with the first but the 2nd. Though I prefer my cousin vinny to a lot of de Niros stuff.

Looks convincing in the Captain Marvel trailer, no reason to think otherwise here. If it works (in both) they'll be the first to pull it off though...

People said the same about The Departed and, ironically, Casino.

wot? :?:

You don't need to be young to be a good actor and you don't have to be young to be a criminal mobster.

I hope Al doesn’t get given his usual, sensitive, quiet type of role.

I’d like to see him challenged by being given a more commanding, forceful, overbearing, maybe even shouty role this time around.

I know what you mean, but he played the former in The Godfather. At least part one.

He has been cast as Jimmy Hoffa. I don't know much about him, but he doesn't seem that shouty. At least not in YouTube interviews.

The Departed was overrated. It's an average remake of a good film.

Al was very good in The Godfather 1.

Pesci worked with De Niro as recently as 2005, on The Good Shepherd.

Should be an interesting movie. Of course the New York families get a lot of the press, but some of the crime stuff in the smaller families are equally interesting. They're all gone now really, or else shadows of themselves. Should be a good movie, I loved The Departed, Shutter Island and I suppose Hugo was ok, haven't seen Silence yet, and WOWS was good for a laugh. The man knows how to make a movie, and that cast know how to act (despite De Niro and Pacino being horribly past it).

I kinda feel the same, but I'd imagine that without having watched IA first, The Departed probably stands decently on its own. It's certainly not Casino/Goodfellas, but it's still pretty decent.

It's quite funny how Pacino's 1970's work differs dramatically to the rest. Many of his 70's films he's quite, intense, letting his body language and facial expressions do the work. Even in a more vocal role like Dog Day Afternoon he's mostly doing this. Then sometime later it's the Al Pacino stereotype.

He makes awesome crime movies and these are top tier actors. Not sure what the problem is? Yeah they're a bit old but they will probably play roles of crime bosses anyway....who are usually old.

The worry is his recent form. The Aviator and Shutter Island weren't exactly great. Also Paul Schrader, his writing partner on some of his best work is now a Director in his own right and isn't writing on The Irishman.

That said, the writer they have got in for The Irishman wrote 'The Night Of' and 'Moneyball' which were very well written.

Can we call the Aviator recent? It was release in 2004, 14 years ago. Shutter Island was 8 years ago.

In recent years he made The Wolf of Wall street, Silence and Hugo, both were excellent. If I have an issue with Scorsese it's that when he goes historical, he simply isn't as good. But when he sticks to crime and doing 'The rise and fall' type stories or self destructive characters he is pretty much always brilliant. His films often gain on re-watching as well, a few of his classics have become regarded as classics years after they were released like 'The King of Comedy'.

I thought it was great. Mark Walberg was surprisingly brilliant in it. What I like about it is that it compliments it's original Infernal Affairs, it has great stuff that isn't in the but would fit and vice versa.

I've not been tempted by Silence, it's yet another average remake by some accounts. I've heard Hugo is great though.

I'm not saying Scorsese can't pull The Irishman off (so to speak), I'm just saying there's probably less chance of it happening now, than say 20 / 30 years ago. Pacino and de Niro aren't going to help that. The latter of which seems to have turned his hand to any old shit as long as it bought him another 10 bedroom house.

I believe everyone will up their game. De Niro hasn't really had anything serious and good to do for years. Don't get me wrong, it's no certain home run here, but Scorsese has not made a 'bad' film in ages, if anything some of his just good films only fall down compared to his best work which equates to the best of almost any director in history and he still throws out a few greats now and again as mentioned.

Shutter Island was a good B film based on a short book, it never had pretensions to be more than that.

The Departed was a good remake of good film.

I would have thought Silence was right up your alley, it's pretentious as shit, goes on too long, and has long long long moments of silence. It's not a remake, it's an adaption of the same source material. I actually think it's the worst film of his that I've seen, not helped by having Garfield as the lead as I find him almost unwatchable.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to it given the talent involved and a director who should be able to get the best out of the talent, it's either going to be awesome or it's not so we win if it is and it doesn't hurt us if it isn't.

Not B film in the olden days style of B film, but in that it was a film put out by an award winning director but was just simple entertainment, nothing more.
