At times Canada is playing very stupid and keeping Kenya in it. Canada should win this but there errors are piling up. Hopefully we will see more of our backline pros starting next week. (Hearn, Trainor, O'Leary) 27 - 12 HT

The first Kenya try was a beauty although a fairly standard left to right move inside the 22. They do have fine athletes - not everyday you see a scrum half outjump opponents to catch a high ball.

Canada need to sharpen up a bit but they are in a good place at the break.

Our coach needs to pick out best 10, he is not even on the bench as he has gone with who he knows. Our 10 right now is normally a 9.

Another converted try each for 34 - 19.

Looking very easy for Canada here, two tries in the space of about 5 minutes

Guys like Ardron and DTH really stand out as being a cut above at this level

Yes and our subs have settled things down quite well. Hearn is a class above Blevins at 12 too.

Canada running away from it now, 58 - 19. Our subs have made a huge difference and has settled the side down quite nicely.

And 65 - 19

Kenya brought in a lot of 7s players, maybe they just don't have the fitness for 80 minutes.

We played much too passively for 45-50 minutes. Kenya was able to control ball possession and field position. Canada started attacking Kenya on both sides of the ball and at speed and then handily put the game out of reach.

Olmstead and Ardron finally came into the game in the second half. Buydens had a good game at the scrum. DTH and Sauder will get the glory, but Baillie, for me, was our Man of the Match. He was excellent from the the opening whistle.

Hearn played well when he came on. His size and experience helped the backline. DSD did well, breaking the line numerous times.

There is much to work on for Canada for the next game.

A nice hefty win for the Canucks. In the other opening game, HK and Germany are 6 each, with Germany having greater possession and territory but HK having far more line breaks. Salom Yiu having at least 4 clear breaks but being caught each time.

Edit - aparently equal possession, Germany having slightly more territory

19-9 and 3 minutes left on sin bin. With the way 2nd half has gone don't see a way back for HK. They lost their own scrum at 5 meters, can not match Germany in physicality and as more time passes their speed advantage is also fading. Complete contrast with the first quarter where HK seemed like the better team. They need a lucky break.

26-9 FT. HK Started well but lack of fitness showed in the 2nd half, too tired at the end. Canada-Germany will be the de facto final of qualifiers next week.

Missed the Germany/HK game but how did the German tighthead Fuchsel do? Has apparently signed with Saracens on a relatively short term basis thanks to the Mouritz Botha connection, never seen him play but any good?

Didn't pay attention to specific players but German set piece was miles better. Especially in the 2nd half.

Canada beat Kenya in game 1 65-19!

We're #20!

DTH had a good day, 3 tries. Our kicking was meh.
Forwards that had good days were Ardron and Beukaboom

My views for our next match:

As long as we have parity in the forwards I can't see us losing unless we have a horrible day in the backs. I am not sold on Jones as a coach in any aspects of coaching or selecting. O'Leary has to start as McRorie won't have the kicking game we will need I fear. I didn't think Sauder had a good of game as others on TSN and twitter are saying. He was good on attack but his D was just alright and he was suspect under the high ball. Rumball deserves to start as does Hearn. If Hearn doesn't start Jones needs his head examined.

My line up for Germany would be:

1. Buydens
2. Barkwill
3. Ilnicki
4. Beukeboom
5. Olmstead
6. Baille
7. Rumball
8. Ardon

9. Mack
10. O'Leary
11. DTH
12. Hearn
13. Trainor
14. Evans
15. Sauder

16. Howard
17. DSD
18. Tienery
19. Larsen
20. Sheppard
21. Another forward
22. McRorie - 9 and 10 cover
23. LeSage

It should be decided in the forwards hence why I would have an extra one on the bench.

If our boys man-up and our backs hold onto the ball, we will win by trys. We have better players across the field (although having better players does not always translate to having the better team). Their hooker (who I gather has been 'German' for about two weeks) looked okay.

I thought LeSage had a good game. My bet is he starts again. O'Leary has to dress. We need another fly and kicker in the 23. I thought McRorie's passing and direction were fine on Saturday. McRorie is a confidence kicker. If he misses one early, his boot can go in the crapper. Germany will kick for territory, so Sauder will have much more work on Saturday. Heaton's early yellow negated his game, and he had to be very careful when he returned to the field. It is like having a #7 play with one hand tied behind his back. If any player gets a red in this tourney, his team's RWC chances could be gone. If you want Rumball to start, it is okay with me.

this will be a forward battle, hence why the extra forward on the bench. Agree that if we front up, we should win. I can accept LeSage starting again, but I think start our best guys and run them off the park. Just have no idea what Jones is going to do, I really think he is our weak link in the team.

Agree that discipline could decide who advances.

As mentioned above, we played too passively against Kenya for the first 50 minutes. It could have been a confidence thing. We have to remember the conditions our players have been training under: an incompetent national union, the 7s players intentionally disrupting the lead-up to the tournament for the XVs, etc.

Collectively, we have the better players in this tournament, and I will say by some margin. It is up to Jones and his staff to do the off the field work that makes us the best team: organization, preparation and selection.

Ardron has to be better from the start on Saturday. He has the size and skill to be dominant in this tournament, and he was not on Sunday.

Germany have a Kiwi flyhalf, who was with Glasgow for a while, who should be fit after missing out vs HK. He’s a match-winner at this level.

Kenya with a try off a lovely backline move, Hong Kong respond with their own to get their BP try

28-17 with 15 mins to play, fun game

so the game finishes 42-17 to HK, meaning Kenya now officially out of the running for RWC 2019

HK getting the bonus point does mean they still technically have a shot of qualifying - most likely route is if Germany win today without a BP, and then slip up against Kenya next week while HK turn over the Canucks

at this stage though it's looking increasingly like the Canada-Germany game will decide the repechage winner - game kicks off in 40 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_6BI_Smxf4

game finished 29-10, Germany now out of the running too. shame, as they were my preferred team to make it through from these four

Canada almost nailed on at this stage - a losing BP vs Hong Kong next week would be enough to get them through. Hong Kong need to win with a BP, deny Canada a BP and rack up a crazy points differential to have a chance

Germany are a typical Rugby-Europe side, Reliant on defense and physical play while having a very blunt and ineffective attack. In the footsteps of Georgia and Romania. Still proud of them, grew up so fast.

Should have 24 team world cup in 2023, there's very little between teams ranked 18 and 22nd. World Cup would give those teams a big nudge forward.

Congrats to the Canadian boys. The final score belies Canada's control of this game. Our forwards dominated the German pack. Kudos to Buydens and Tierney who pushed around the German props in the first half.

Olmstead and Baillie were outstanding. I will go with the former for the Man of the Match, although the latter could easily get the nod. Ardron was strong. The whole pack was very good. We did not need to use the backline much as the forwards did the job. The one issue for them was their three turnovers inside the German five metre line.

There is still everything to play for against Hong Kong on Friday.
