The 'French' side have snatched back 6 from scrum pens, but they've not really done anything yet. Apologies to Newcastle if this invokes the mockers' wrath, but just being factual.

Rain's starting to set in, which may not suit Newcastle against the beefier Montpellier pack.

A couple of knock ons 5 metres out have saved Montpellier's blushes over the last few minutes. Falcons are getting a lot of line breaks, but the visitors' scrum is well on top.

Newcastle's breakdown work in the rain is starting to balance out the scrum and they currently lead 16-6.

Falcons defend Montpellier's only meaningful 22 excursion really well. Mark Wilson forces the knock on and Hodgson puts in a big clearance.

Half ends with the score unchanged, a bit of a scuffle and Gary Graham sending the Montepellier 11 flying with a carry off a scrum.

A very good half for Newcastle, shackling Montpellier well and dictating terms.

The bloodgate coach seems to be doing a really good job with Newcastle.

Rain's cleared up and Montpellier have asserted themselves a bit mroe physically in defence. 16 - 12 to the good guys after a couple of 'French' pens.

16 17 now Monty careless with the ball and yet win a penalty.
Now 16 20. Newcastle have given away 13 penalties to 4.

You'd want to be a serious masochist to buy a Montpellier season ticket.

10-0 penalty count in the second half. A few very harsh, but that's terrible discipline!

And a yellow. Also harsh, given that the initial contact wasn't high, but at 10-0 a card was inevitable.

Lucky that's not a red. Would be better off getting a red maybe IMO, if he gets cited he could pick up a ban anyway. Given the game is nearly over anyway.

11-0 penalty count now.

Just brutal.

Falcons can't retain possession or defend for more than a few phases without getting pinged. Utterly one-sided second 40.

Missed most of the last 25, shame to see Falcons need a last minute miracle to win.

And Montpellier were consistently offside on the goal line so it balances out you sour plum.

Well done, Falcons.

Shambolic. Pick and go, flop over ruck to prevent contest. Repeat x 30. Cowardly reffing.

Ball has to go dead in rugby. Clock can run on as long as the ball is in play.

Yup. There was no reffing at all in that last nine minutes. No wonder Falcons thought they could score without going to the backs. All they had to do was avoid a knock-on and they could just grind, block, seal off and eventually work their way over.

Great win for Falcons, though.

TJ even called it once and was overruled by the ref.

It was 2008 Munster like in the sealing off.

Also plenty of not rolling away and hands on the ball after ruck was called - ref seemed like he didn’t want to make anything but the most clear and obvious calls against either side in that final set

After blowing for penalties every 3 minutes (on average) in that second half, for the full 8 minutes of added time he didn't/couldn't/wouldn't see any offence by either side. And not for want of opportunity.

Unless the situation is reversed and the ref whistles after 3 rucks.

On the contrary - I'm quite happy with the result, so no whinge.

And I was actually complimenting Lacey's performance on the other thread. If you learned to read, you would have noticed that.
