'How much can a player change after a stint in the north'

Look at Will Skelton, in Saracens cup final. Then compare that to the kak who played in Australia.

It doesn't help when players who couldn't even make a SR squad get national call-ups overseas.
Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend on Tuesday completed the national team’s training squad in preparation for Rugby World Cup 2019, with the selection of uncapped Glasgow Warriors pair Scott Cummings and Kyle Steyn

Amazing. He went to Trinity House in Joburg, whom my old school used to play in rugby (we were shit and we used to thump them).

Further evidence of the gap in coaching between SA and the rest of the world.

Hey I am not so sure assfly.....if the parents create the right enviroment for their kids there is always opurtunity....

Here in the Cape there are fantastic structures in place for encouraging children to excel...and if you go the extra mile with coaching clinics run by ex players off season the kids get great one on one experience to develop basic skills...and its really not expensive and keeps the kids in touch and out of mischief and creates a great bond in the team enviroment.

Usually there are a group of coaches in the area that service an area and if you connect with them you can be a part of it....

There I cannot fault the Western Cape and its no surprise the kids are so competitive...

Agreed on all of that, sorry I was referring more to the senior rugby and how a guy who can't get the nod for a SR team can still get selected for another national team for a world cup.

About 60% of schools in the WC play rugby compared to less than 10% in the rest of the country (Gauteng it's about 5%). Most clubs outside the WC don't offer youth rugby (not sure about the WC) and there is no youth club rugby league

Its a bit difficult in the Western Cape after the drought...Rugby really churns up the fields and pretty quickly you get a sand pit.......

My kid played hockey and cricket on some of the fields that are multi purpose....when they hit the ball it just sticks in te sand...so unless you lift it it goes nowhere....

I love watching those of this parish that have kids playing rugby, other sports and cricket on vliesboek...the like of our honourable assfly, our funny as hell mod Thomas from Australia and of course our very own Paarlbok and his chicken runners

Ireland's coaching staff is amazing that they can be that good playing with average players like Kleyn.

Eben Etzebeth’s readiness for the Springbok Test season is in jeopardy after he reportedly broke his hand on Saturday while on duty for the Stormers against the Lions at Ellis Park.

With the Capetonians having recovered from an early Lions onslaught to reduce the deficit to 13-10 at halftime, they were dealt a major blow as Etzebeth did not come out for the second half.

How long does it take to recover from a broken hand. The world cup is not until September.

South Africa seem to be blessed at lock. De Jager, Snyman, Mostert (and Etzebeth).

I don't actually think they would miss Etzebeth as much as people think?

Who would be the replacement if Etzebeth misses out? I would guess Ruan Botha

Botha is a #5. RG, PSdT or even Mostert might move to 4, they can play all there. Might be RG's best chance to get a regular spot as Sous and Lood are the first choice #5s

Afrikaans newspaper Rapport indicated on Sunday that Stormers scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies could get a national call-up.

The 23-year-old Jantjies has been a standout performer for the Stormers this season and looks set to be rewarded.

The report added that Jantjies is currently preferred to the Bulls scrumhalf duo of Embrose Papier and Ivan van Zyl, who made their Springbok debuts last season.

Jantjies may even start against the Wallabies on July 20, with the report adding that incumbent scrumhalf Faf de Klerk will only be considered for the Test against the All Blacks in Wellington on July 27.

England-based Cobus Reinach (Northampton Saints) and Francois Hougaard (Worcester Warriors), are reportedly also part of the discussion.

The report added that French-based centre Frans Steyn could also face the Wallabies, with regular midfielder Damian de Allende rested. The 32-year-old Steyn played the last of his 56 Tests in 2017.

Doesn't change the fact that they can kick, Jantjies not so much.

He's made some great sniping runs and scored some good tries but his passing can be wild, putting his #10 under pressure, and his kicking is often inaccurate. Saw this again over the weekend

Like Faf his game needs to mature before he will be good enough for the Boks. This year is too early

Papier has all the same attributes but now it seems even the Bulls have relegated him to a squad player, not even on the bench
