Any team that includes Marvin Orrie is incredibly strong.

True, although the Lions will probably field their best available to start, while last year a number of bench/fringe players started and it showed with the Lions falling behind 32-14 before getting back into the game. Too little too late though.

I think it's going to be a tough game and it will be interesting to see how much the departed players - Sanchez, Mostert, etc - are missed

Odds:

Jaguares 2.5
Lions 1.67
Handicap: Lions -4

Weird considering the Lions have never beaten the Jaguares in Argentina

Tough first game for the Lions. At least they've got a strong team and Andries Coetzee available.

Don't forget Jantjies, Orie and Skosan - all the fan favourites :)

Anyway, I would like to see the Lions break their duck in Argentina and start the season with a good win

The Lions lost the services of loose forward Kwagga Smith (calf strain) and lock Stephan Lewies (minor pectoral tear) ahead of their opening match of the season.

Both are expected to be fit in a week, but are out of the team to face the Jaguares on Saturday.

Players who did not make the trip to BA include Cyle Brink (recovering from long-term injury), Robbie Coetzee (recovering from long-term injury), Johannes Jonker (recovering from long-term injury) and Ross Cronje (recovering from long-term injury).

So the Lions are sending a second rate team gain.

A number of youngsters are making their debuts for the Lions:

3. Carlu Sadie (21) – 2016/17 Junior Bok on loan to the Lions, played 8 games off the bench for the Stormers but stuck behind Springboks Frans Malherbe and Wilco Louw.
4. Rhyno Herbst (22) – A strong #4 lock who styles his play on Bakkies Botha, hopefully without the penalties
16. Pieter Jansen (23) – Still has to prove himself at senior level
17. Frans van Wyk (23) – 2015 Junior Bok. Played 13 SR games for the Bulls (3 starts) and can scrum both sides
19. Ruan Vermaak (20) – 2018 Junior Bok
21. Gianni Lombard (21) – 2017/18 Junior Bok who plays 10 and 15
22. Wandisile Simelane (20) – 2017/18 Junior Bok, plays midfield and wing. Probably one of the most anticipated SA Super Rugby debuts

Herbst, Jansen, Vermaak, Lombard and Simelane were part of the Lions junior teams that won number of SA's u19 and u21 competitions

LIONS COACH DE BRUIN REVEALS REASON BEHIND TEAM'S TRAVEL STRATEGY

Having failed to register a win against the tough Argentinean franchise on their travels, De Bruin was happy to trial a new travel strategy for the lengthy South American flight.

"We travel on Wednesday morning. In the past, we would first travel the Friday, Saturday or Sunday before so we could spend the week there. We tried to delay the travel. So, we'll only have one practice day and then play the game."

Their travel strategy is nothing new explained De Bruin. They attempted it in 2018 on a trip to Australia, but never to South America.

"We did it last year. I know it's a different direction but we did it against the Waratahs last year and it worked well for us - we gave them 29 -0 on the day by travelling very late. It gives the guy's confidence to travel late so we going to stick to that."
https://ewn.co.za/2019/02/13/lions-coac ... l-strategy

I'm fairly certain the Lions traveled late in 2016 and 2017 as well

I imagine Jaguares defending hard and trying to use the kick intelligently, because at the beginning of the season, ball handling errors are very common and costly in terms of the opponent's score.

Trivia:
- Each of the previous seven meetings between the Jaguares and Lions has been won by the home team, with the Lions holding the edge with four wins to the Jaguares’ three.

- The Jaguares have won eight of their last 10 games at home against South African opposition, including their last four on the bounce in which they’ve scored an average of 39 points per game.

- The Lions have lost their last four games in a row outside South Africa; the last time they lost more was a nine-game stretch from 2011 to 2014.

- The Jaguares kicked 15 penalty goals in the opening 20 minutes of their matches last season, the most of any team, while the Lions kicked just two, with no team converting fewer.

- Lions duo Kwagga Smith (31) and Malcolm Marx (27) won more turnovers than anyone else in last year’s Super Rugby.

Well, Landajo was not that bad if memory serves me right during the last match he played. In fact he was a bit better than Bertranou. The reality is he may be the right scrum half for a game closing.

Regarding Mallía, I prefer Diaz Bonilla over him.

Montoya, Alemano, Kremer, Moroni, that is a great bench.

Someone commented that after the World Cup, Landajo and García Botta will move to London (Harlequins). Considering that Cubelli seems to be struggling to get back to his level - after the neck injury in RC 2017 - we have to think seriously about Felipe Ezcurra's return to Jaguares.
In theory, Mioti and Gonzalez Iglesias should have been the natural substitutes for TDB, but Quesada, who knows something about flyhalves, is apparently seeing something else.

Motoya, Pieretto, Alemanno, Kremer and Moroni are very promising as impact players.

Zeiss makes a great effort to compete in the SR but his extraction of Argentine amateur rugby was late, perhaps.

Lions loose trio: Bull terriers or show ponies?

They are quick, agile and skilled, but the Lions' light loose trio must prove in Buenos Aires on Saturday that they are physically enough to curb the Jaguares heavyweight pack.

7 Rodrigo Bruni - 1.85m, 110 kg

Not such a difference in weight as is made out to be but the difference in height could come into play

According to Ticketek, tickets are still available. In cases like these you can usually buy tickets at the Stadium but I can't say for sure.

That's a terrible ruck penalty decision against the Jaguares there as they're attacking the Lions line...

One of the Lions players is clearly lying all over their side of the ruck.

Probably decided the game. A score then and it could've gone either way.
