At some point those scrums were very dangerous, the ref was a prick to let them keep moving forward.

Was it a full team and what was the final score?

They did something similar to the NZ Maori scrum too last year, quite a sight.

The strength from the Brasil tighthead at 27s is quite something, his opposite has both elbows and knees on the ground and he manages to drive the guy back without collapsing.

18-10 to Brazil

I watched the whole game and Canada is a pale image of what it used to be.

Brazil has three things, a very strong scrum, good kickers and stunning women, that's it no more than that.

Why? They're not even very good at 7s, I can understand Fiji doing it but Canada?

Rugby Canada make the ARU look competent that’s why.

Olympics hype. I suspect they enjoyed the attention and money our Olympic committee was offering... but then the men failed to qualify.

The govering bodies also spend loads if money on rep teams while not putting much effort into finding and developing (properly) the best athletes. Huge bonus if you are in BC or pack up your life and move there. For years, the junior rep teams feature those who went to the right schools (so learned more and knew what they were doing, but weren’t as likely to be physically up to men’s international standard) and those who can afford to pay a few thousand a year for the honour (more for all the travel to sessions).

There will be some physical specimens in there but I’d scrap national competitions and pump up regions in hopes of keeping and educating many more kids as they mature and show growth / mettle.

My friend’s son has been doing provincial ‘Academy’ sessions and they’re often no better than what one would get with a good school or club coach. And that program seems to also be for those willing to pay and drive an hour or so to training each week (not necessarily the best players from what I’ve seen).

They can play in any position as long as you are nice to them.

Wow...There could be cricket scores run up against them in Japan later in the year.

They could and their coach Kingsley Jones is an awful coach, but keep in mind Brazil did this to the Maori scrum as well. They have a legit scrum and some European club would be very smart to take a look at some of their props, particularly Vettorato.

About 10 years old RC drank the 7s cool aid and started focusing all their resources into 7s. It worked for a little while, 2010 - 2014, when the XVs guys were in their prime and 7s was on the upswing. However, 7s has proven one thing, get speedsters in and you don't need guys with a long track record in rugby, whereas in XVs you do. When this came to a head - all talented backs were being shovelled into 7s and all good backrowers too, things failed, coupled with a grassroots uprising over fan support for the XVs game, they have reverted course and started funding XVs again (last year). It will take 5 - 10 years to fix this mess. BCRN wrote a good article on this about how the scrum is not practiced enough in Canada anymore: http://bcrugbynews.com/show_news.cfm?ID=3067

The Brazilians really aren’t too bad, they are at least competitive against every team except Argentina and usually manage a good win or two each year.

They even put together a decent try every now and then.

Didn’t know about that, thank God. When I first got into the game Canada was a class above us, we were rarely even competitive. I hated to think the Canadians wouldn’t even be at the RWC this year.

To be fair though, you guys were unlucky not to beat Italy in the last RWC. If not for that dumb Phil Mack quick tap and an empty 7 jersey in the form of Moonlight. Might have been the worst performance I’ve ever seen from an open side at the international level.

I think it needs to be pointed out that BCRN is a vocal supporter of 7s and of Rugby Canada's policy of shifting talented backs and backrowers to 7s. Sauder is away from that gang and Percillier is training in France, so there might be hope for them.

The key issue about your post is the persons who got Canada in this mess are the ones who say they will get us out of it.

Probably a few factors

1. Brazil are improving rapidly
2. That's not Canada's strongest team
3. Brazil are at home
4. 7s is making Canada little girls.

Well, yeah. Our strongest side, without a moron coach picking it, would have beaten Brazil but I don't they we would have been much stronger in the scrum. Perhaps we would have gotten parity but that would be it.
