I'm interested in replies. I've not been there but it's on my list.

Lovely place, but I've not been in a few years so not sure if it gets a bit too crowded - I think cruise liners might stop off there and it's not that big a place.

I stayed in a little fishing village called Cavtat on the airport side of Dubrovnik for a conference, really lovely relaxed place and the boat trip round to Dubrovnik well worth doing. We drove down from Split and the coast was stunning.

eta: as above, it's not all that big and - being principally a walled city - there are better beaches elsewhere so you might want to hire a car for a few trips - apparently Montenegro is really nice but we didn't realise we needed additional insurance on hire car so got turned around at border. The additional insurance was only a few quid so we were kicking ourselves for not checking first.

Forgot to mention - we had one evening out in Dubrovnik, we went to a restaurant built into the old town walls, I can't recall name (and it;s probably changed by now anyway) but aside from fantastic food the setting and views were utterly glorious. There are a few such restaurants in the walls but be a bit careful, as some looked quite tourist-trappy.

Did Croatia last year, Dubrovnik was fantastic but I'd stay away in August and possibly July. Sept was ok crowd and heat wise. The old town is spectacular, the walk around the whole wall, great kayak out to the island and carry your swimmers on you at all times as there are plenty of spots to jump in the water just outside the walls. One very cool place with a little bar through a hole in the wall where you can have a beer right on a cliff over the water and jump into super deep water straight off the rocks. Ideal late afternoon after all the walking.

We stayed in Lapad which was a nice quiet neighbourhood with cool restaurants and beaches close.

3 days more than enough all the same. Get up to Hvar.

Yeah had a meal at the Restuarant in the walls at the old harbour. The view and genreal people watching craic was worth the bill alone.

There a fast rib that acts as a bus from Cavtat. Its hilarious watching the, mainly women, coming off it ready to throw their guts up

Save your money and go to Conwy instead. Much more impressive and less Slavic.

Yeah, it will be scorching and fair heaving during July - August. September it's still mid to high 20s, but there will be fewer other tourists. If you can I'd do a few days there and a few in Split with day trips to places like Hvar

Yep. was there a few years ago in late August, 36 and 37 degrees on each day, escaped to the nearby Plitvice national park which was about 30 and f**king beautiful.

I cannot visit everywhere in the world. I've sailed in Croatia but it was a short trip. Would have liked to have gone there.

Love the old town, been there many times. One restaurant overlooking the harbour is the Arsenal, lovely food at reasonable prices with a fantastic view - a fave haunt of mine whenever I was in town.

Grab a ferry from the harbour for the 10min ride to the nature reserve island and spend a day there. Take swimming cozzy for the beautiful inland lagoon and enjoy strolling around the place in general. Superb.

Well worth a trip for a few days but I would stay about 15K away in a place called Cavtat . Very nice place and a short trip into Dubrovnik by Taxi or indeed about 40 minutes by water taxi.

Depending on time of year Dubrovnik can be too crowded.

If it's just the weather and food you're going for, you might be better flying into Split and getting a ferry to Supertar and then a taxi to Bol which is a stunning little village with a great beach and good food.

If it's the walking round the walls, nightlife etc then just go to Dubrovnik even with the crowds.

We went there last September and spent a few nights in Dubrovnik and a few more nights in Split (Took a bus from Dubrovnik to Split). Dubrovnik was very touristy, not that cheap and smaller than I had expected. Anyways we enjoyed it however we enjoyed Split more. I'd imagine in summer month it would be very busy.
