All dead :(
An Ethiopian Airlines passenger plane bound for Kenya has crashed killing all 149 passengers and eight crew members.

An Ethiopian Airlines spokesman confirmed that the Boeing 737 plane had crashed on a routine flight from Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa to Nairobi on Sunday.

Ethiopia's state broadcaster EBC reported everyone on the plane had died and that passengers included 33 nationalities, including 32 Kenyans and 17 Ethiopians.

The plane took off at 8:38am (0638 GMT) from Bole International Airport and "lost contact" six minutes later near Bishoftu, a town some 37 miles southeast of Addis Ababa.

The airline staff were being sent to the scene of the crash to "do everything possible to assist the emergency services." It also plans to set up a passenger information centre and a dedicated telephone number for family and friends of people who may have been on board the flight.

Terrible news.

I'm flying with Ethiopian in April, Dublin - Addis - Cape Town. Trying to reassure the missus now.

A brand new 737 Max. I guess you'll most likely be on one of their larger planes.

Sad news. Ethiopian Airlines seem to have a good reputation.
The plane involved in today's crash is a version of the model involved in a fatal crash in Indonesia last year which killed all 189 passengers and crew on board.

Lion Air flight JT610 - a Boeing 737 MAX - crashed into the Java Sea 12 minutes after take-off on 29 October.

I wonder are people starting to rethink this old saying if it's not Boeing I ain't going. Seems to have been quite a lot of incidents in recent years (yes before some wise arse says so they have a lot of planes in the sky)

Have you flown with them before? They're outstanding and are just about to complete a brand new airport that will be world class facility.

They're miles ahead of anyone else on the continent, including SAA and Kenya Airways.

I am in the new 737 quite a lot and these crashes are not helping my old fear of flying. People in seatle will be running around checking whats been happening, or running around to put a spin on it.

A friend of mine who is a pilot for Kenya Airways just put on Facebook that there appears to be a lot of concern from pilots about the 737max.

On your post further up, I think I'll be on 787. That was my experience last time I flew with them.

They're a very good airline in my experience, possibly better than BA or Air France. I wouldn't be put off by this anyway. Addis airport is a hoot too.

Agree with this, very good airline. It’s a real shame for them as they were pushing it so hard and this is bound to knock them back, particularly with less informed flyers... poor wit kant on board. It’s a route I do a couple of times a year

This must be a bit worrying for Boeing. Its the 2nd 737 max that has gone done in a relatively short period of time. Not a good record for an aircraft model that has only been in service since 2016 i think.

I think i need to keep a closer eye on what aircraft is in use on future short flights i plan to take. Maybe a good idea to avoid this aircraft for the time being.

Worked with them for the last few years.

Their fleet age is just over 5 whereas BA's (and Air France) is over 13.

based on what, their on-board product? only 9 years ago they lost a 737 in the mediterranean after takeoff in beirut.

No comments on Ethiopian, who I have heard good things about but never flown with, but this is a reason I generally prefer to fly BA. Service can be poorer, but I feel pretty confident in their maintenance and pilots.

I didn't say it had anything to do with safety. Merely pointing out that they're a modern operation and having worked with them, I found them highly professional. I've also worked with SAA, Air Kenya, Virgin and BA.
