Enjoyed the first track on the pre-release, I see it's now available in full. Cheers

Was looking forward to Ryan Adams :uhoh:

While I've always found him hit and miss, the hits were cracker. Silly bloke has got himself in the shit bigtime.

 good point.

I was starting to think that 10,000 Days was more than just an album name.

Which has taken longer, Chinese Democracy or the new Tool album?

Jessica Pratt - Quiet Signs

Karen O/ Danger Mouse - Lux Prima

Westkus - Westkus

Sharon Van Etten - Remind me Tomorrow

Still a lot to come out though, new The National, The 1975, Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, Mac De Marco etc to come out, so hopefuly gets better

The album or the artist?

Seconded though, and if it's Thompson who's new to you, there's a hell of a back catalogue to dive into.

I've never understood the fascination with them. I just don't get why they have such a cult following.
But I don't knock anyone who is a fan, I'm a huge - and I mean HUGE - fan of Dream Theater and most people probably think the same way about them as I do about Tool...

These people are all plebs of course :D

I don't think the Tool album took such a long time to make. They had a very long legal battle with their record label which took years. They started working on the album after all that was over with.

PS: I'm not 100% sure of all the details, but I'm sure that is the TLDR version of it....
Maynard was on the JRE and went in to some detail, but I can't remember all of it.

The first band I was in suffered from a Dream Theater cultist. We wanted to be the next Finch or Glassjaw (the emo end of the post-hardcore spectrum for those who don't know) and unbeknown to us the only decent guitarist we knew at 15 years old was a massive prog fan who once in the band kept trying to get us to write 6 minute plus epics half the run time of which consisted of guitar solos. We lasted about 3 months.

In a behind the scenes doc, John Petrucci (Dream Theater guitarist) once said: "We are so preposterously uncool that it actually makes us cool"

Sums them up well tbf, Dave Matthews Band probably fall into a similar category.

Painfully aware of Mr Petrucci, rehearsals could often subside into sermons on his genius despite our best efforts...

As it seems you lot are well into your Prog, I strongly recommend this album

Here they are performing for Prog magazine (in case you were worried about them being too cool): https://youtu.be/7EWrP4dFKyA

All subjective of course...

But this

https://youtu.be/8Ik9qECIWgc

Vs

https://youtu.be/uCEeAn6_QJo

You have to see Dream Theater live to truly appreciate how utterly wanky and uncool they are.

That's exactly what I was saying. I've seen them live on more than one occasion.
You've also selected an instrumental to make your "point", which of course is just a self fulfilling prophecy.

Are you not a fan of their instrumentals? Why would that be?

Feel free to link all their music to aid my point.

I am indeed, but I also understand that the average listener will not like it. So if I was to introduce someone to the band, an instrumental would be the last song I'd start with.
Also, the majority of their fans are musicians, which is why they find them so awesome and why their live shows are basically a giant music nerd fest.

As per my first post, the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same stuff. Peace out.

I made an observation as to how tastes vary and gave an example, followed by posts saying how shite the band in my example is. Maybe they felt like I was criticising their love for Tool? I don't know.

Tool crowds are also extremely nerdy, albeit more ‘edgy’ type of nerds. Their average fan must spend equal parts playing Starcraft / listening to Tool.

Well to add to the actual topic, La Dispute's new album is up to their normal standards.

Just given it a scan on Tidal. Great opening track, but seems a bit of a mess thereafter. A couple of Nils Frahm type of tracks too - just not quite as good.

But a great opening track

Exactly what I thought. I'll probably look out for the film to see how it puts the music into context.

Dream Theater, Distance Over Time, a big improvement since the last few efforts.
