The key to it is the article was actually written by someone that knows what he's talking about, instead of the writer being no different than a random hack spouting their opinion on a message board.

Good point. Perhaps that is why it has attracted better/less fanatical comments too.

The Guardian's comments section has often been the bets part of an article, often exposing the lack of knowledge or accuracy in the understanding of the author. Which is why it's a crying shame the Guardian purposely closes comments for it's most batshit commentators and the most batshit politically suspect pieces under the pretence of controlling abuse.
