f**king terrible. Must be f**king devastating.

Sinkers, possible they are family friends. Does their surname rhyme with Grey?

The Dulwich School and Tanglin rugby club communities have been rocked by this tragedy. Names are in the Guardian.

It’s ducking horrible.
That that dad can be making such touching and articute tributes to his wife and kids already is amazing. Most people would be in bits I expect.

The Sri Lankan Defence minister is now reporting that they believe the attacks were a direct retaliation by the NTJ for the Christchurch attacks. :(

That smug cunt locked up in Christchurch will be loving this stuff, I hope he never gets to hear of it.

Call it what you want, but parsing the language between 'Easter worshipper' and 'Christian' is extraordinarily petty.

Of course it's nothing compared to the disgusting bombings, but no-one 'worships Easter'. No one held back from calling the horrible Christchurch attack an attack on Muslims (which it was). Likewise, this is an attack on Christians, not 'Easter worshippers'.

Ignoring his lack of comprehension saves a lot of time.

In the mean time
The one time coalition in the Sri Lankan govt is already having a go at each other, the PM from the United National Party is blaming El Presidente from the Freedom Party for not being proactive enough - the claim by the President that there were no warning signs before the attacks has already been shown to be very inaccurate, specific terrorists were known to security forces, on top of several other indicators.

Its now easy to see how something like this could of happened with the dysfunction, some one in the SL even mentioned this being a revenge attack for chch. Its sad to see govt after this horrible tragedy pointing fingers and shit trying to deflect blame and gain advantage its a little sickening.

By people pretending not to recognise a straight-forward noun phrase when they see one. ‘Easter worshippers’ parses to church-goers attending an Easter service. Of which there were lots.

The churches is Negombo were so packed on Good Friday that folk were watching the service from outside the front door.

Really sad news about the bombings, I've spent some time in Sri Lanka just over 10 years ago, when the war was still going on. Wonderful place and people. Attended the Dehiwalla church a number of times with my wife, and it's hard to take in the devastation this has caused, and will cause to the whole society. I remember that despite the war, that in the area I stayed there was a mutual respect and sense of community between the various configurations of faith and race. People helped each other (more readily than you often find in other urban environments) and got on. There was a sense that the war was coming to an end, and there would be a reconciliation with the north.
One of the most highly regarded (by all races) people I met was a Muslim mayor of a rural district just south of Colombo. He was a lovely man, with a reputation for integrity and being hardworking...the folk really rated him.

At the same time as all of this there seemed a dangerous undercurrent that extreme elements...from all sides...were keen to stir things up. This was multi-faceted: as we saw in northern Ireland with the IRA trying to cling to some legitimacy in a changing environment, hard-line Buddhists were getting nasty...the tigers were stepping military opps up, and folk were starting to worry about radical Islamists.
I've seen Buddhists monks fighting in street brawls, heard of recent riots and killings between muslims and Buddhists in Kandy, and now this.
There is a lot to love about Sri Lanka, and a lot to hate.
I hated that money was spent on war, when hospitals in not so rural areas barely had water and electricity. I've seen old men with tb share facemasks for nebulizers with babies with asthma. Some doctors have little to no equipment, but the annual dinner in 5 star luxury hotels in columbo was an event of sickening opulence.

I hope things get better, despite the forces trying to sow chaos.
:((

The bombers were the sons of a millionaire, following a not uncommon pattern of other Islamist terrorism being committed or organised by educated, wealthy people.

Everybody with a basic level of attention has known since 911 that this is nothing to do with poverty.

That pretty much highlights that, that smug cnut locked up in auckland and ISIS have a lot in common and are basically allies against the rest of us, because they want the same thing. He has more in common with ISIS by a huge margin than any of his victims did.

I have seen a few of the videos that capture the bombers walking to their targets. To the churches and inside the hotels.

The individuals breeze past bystanders as calm as you like knowing they are seconds from ending their own lives and the lives of many others. Their apparent calm is utterly chilling.

If Obama had called them Christians, the same people would be wailing that he didn't even know they were celebrating Easter, because he's so ignorant of Christianity because he's probably a secret muslim.

I have a retired priest uncle. He worked in the north of England for 40 years. When he retired his parish was left without a priest. I give him a ring now and then to see how he is, every year at Easter he tells me he's going back to his parish for "Easter worship". It's a fairly common expression.

It did strike me as a little odd that all/ most of the Democratic names that tweeted about it referred to the victims as Easter worshippers. I don't mean to sound paranoid but it did seem like a memo had been sent out.

These days I'd assume virtually every term or phrase by a long term politico type will have been group tested within an inch of it's life. I'd not assume that it's some secret, coded, calculated insult towards Christians though. Whoever spotted it, and chose to make an issue of it did very well in getting the arguments and uniform language out though, all the upset about it has been remarkably similarly phrased - it's likely been group tested within an inch of it's life too.
