It mightn't be the greatest pick-up line on the planet, but it seems a fair few people would be tempted by it.

A global poll by travel site Big 7 Travel has named the New Zealand accent the sexiest on Earth, describing it as "outrageously charming".

"To a novice ear, the New Zealand accent might sound just like the Australian accent, but Big 7 Travel readers disagree... The sexiest accent in the world? It's official," the site, which claims to have an audience of 1.5 million, said.


The Aussie accent, incidentally, came in at number five, those dropped or drawn-out vowels and insistence on calling the number six "sex" apparently making all the difference.

"Pronouncing words long and slow - and often skipping the ends of them completely - is a real turn on apparently," the site said.

As someone who can't help but cringe when I hear a "Nu Zillund" accent after being overseas for a while (although perhaps John Key's tight-lipped tendency to do away with vowels is to blame), I found the news somewhat surprising.

Along with the South African accent scoring second place. No offence to my Saffa mates, but I wouldn't have thought endless repetitions of "howzit" (hello), "is it?" (really?) and "just now" (when I get around to it) would set many hearts aflutter.

According to Big 7, however, those "unique tones and Safa slang" make Afrikaans "a hugely popular accent with many people across the globe".

The Irish accent came in third, with the site saying it's a turn on whether "it's a Jamie Dornan-esque Northern Irish accent or a lilting Cork jibe".


The Italian, Scottish, French, Spanish, southern US and Brazilian Portuguese accents rounded out the top 10.

"Clear, clipped and completely polished" Queen's English, incidentally, was ranked the twelfth sexiest.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Croatian accent came in at number 50 on the list of 50, suggesting it's unlikely to talk many into bed, followed by the Romanian accent, described as "almost similar to Italian, but not quite there".

The Thai, Pakistani and "harsh... yet super clear" German accents were also in the bottom five.

With an estimated 7000 languages on Earth and many more accents, New Zealand's win is no mean feat. So if your love life's a mess here, it might be time to consider an OE (or extended holiday at least).

Likewise, I can see how the Saffa accent can be seen as quaint and interesting. I mean, a nice posh Saffa accent on a bird is lovely (as opposed to the boner-killing Klingon/Baby Dutch spoken by Afrikaners) as long as you're not talking about food, wine and the weather (which is all better back in South Africa, apparently).

I can understand why German is in the bottom five but I have to admit nearly ejaculating in my pants every 5 minutes as a randy 20 year old when I stayed with a group of backpacking German girls in Byron Bay for a week. To this day I get slightly turgid if I hear someone say "Can you come to the laundromat with me" in a German accent.
