Meng / Haku always gets talked about as being easily the toughest real life person out there, even Andre was scared of him
What does that actually mean?
That if things weren't fake he could have beaten up most of the other wrestlers.
I thought that was obvious.
So you're saying 'The rude awakening' is the most lethal move in wrestling just like the five point palm exploding heart technique is the most lethal blow in martial arts?

Jake ‘the Snake’ Roberts on Joe Rogan Experience: “André and I got on, I liked him and he liked me...” - everyone else: “André hated Jake..!”

Also, Roberts on JRE = BEST Macho Man impression/story. https://youtu.be/kUtW7ymtOh0

I saw that, it's saved on my Sky box. Amazing watching the early stuff when he was very mobile as opposed to the lumbering, injury crippled guy he became at the end if his career.

Interesting to see Vince McMahon explaining he is basically a sociopath, but also the genuine sadness he showed when asked about André's death.

Yeah when the WWF arrived on our NZ TVs in 1987 Andre was just an overweight, giant freak. Seeing him as an athletic, fit young man was an eye opener.

The way he died was sad but I guess he was always destined for a short life.

Another real life bad a$$ was Razor Ramon ....he killed a man while working as a bouncer at a strip club back in the day.

If you want to, go to the Crime in Sports podcast (comedians who do it) and listen to the podcast on Scott Hall/Razor Ramon...and also the one on Jim the Anvil Neidhart...you laugh, shake your head, etc

Some of the anecdotes about Haka are ridiculous. But there's enough of them around to extrapolate that He was a genuinely tough sob.

Maybe also listen to the former Dean Ambrose on Jericho's podcast to get some idea about how the old man has really lost it.

I think the 4 plus years of pushing the very dull Roman Reigns as the new Steve Austin clearly against the fans wishes constantly showed he really lost it.

I mean that's one thing, but at a deeper level their creative process is fundamentally rotten. A deluded old man at the core hoovering up dire ideas thinking they're absolute gold.

Agreed. Though to be fair, McMahon has always done that (the cartoon gimmics of the mid 90's). The WWE has always spewed shite at times or ruined talent. When you look at when he has excelled it's usually because he's great at running with something hot. Hogan, Savage, DX, Austin, Foley etc. His best stuff comes not from his own creative ideas but adding to wrestlers who are capturing the imagination. The problem is McMahon no longer is surrounded by creatives who understand how wrestling works and Wrestlers are no longer allowed to do their own thing and develop their own heat.

Don't think so, just cut his head open horrifically. He then later died of complications from a stomach band operation.

He did stab a guy multiple times in the ring, deliberately fracture a guys skull with a steel chair, fracture his own skull (brain fluid leaking out of his ears) and sundry other things on Youtube.

Mentalist. Complete mentalist.

There's also rumours (maybe lies) that he has a few justified homicides on his name from when he was a bounty hunter.

Not into pro wrestling at all, but some of the people in it are fascinating.

When Savage left WWF, he was the color commentator at the time, and I think this is where Jerry Lawler started doing it. Anyway, when the next show comes on the air, Vince is staring right at the camera and is verbally polite about Savage leaving, but his facial knowledge he is seething inside it. It's quite the odd watch and lends credence to the theory.
unseenwork wrote:I mean that's one thing, but at a deeper level their creative process is fundamentally rotten. A deluded old man at the core hoovering up dire ideas thinking they're absolute gold.
I used to watch regular and I quit a little after the post-Daniel Bryan WrestleMania. What happened was Bryan got hurt in the middle of a horrid Kane feud, and they broke up the Shield. You can't help it if guys get injured, and I understand the Shield had to break up, but those 2 acts carried the whole show and nothing replaced them. Throw on top of it you had the McMahons all over the product on air which was and still is a tired act, Roman Reigns starting to get pushed as super #1 baby face when the crowd hated it and I had seen that already for Cena for a good 6 to 8 years. I keep up on everything, and it's not surprising their TV numbers have cratered, although it doesn't matter because they're getting bucketloads of TV money beginning in October from a new TV contract.

It's a stale product and nothing is going to improve until Vince voluntarily leaves (not happening), forced out (probably not happening), or dies (some day). Wish All Elite Wrestling all the best.

Apparently haku took out a bar full of marines, I guess it shows how tough and gung ho the marines are, who the hell would want to go out of their way to mess with a 330+ pound Tongan?

I wonder why people would want to start beef with him? Seems a lot where racists bigots and they say Haku was generally polite and mild mannered till you did something to make him lose it, maybe they thought he was some sort of gentle giant or something?

New Jack was a classic ECW wrestler, in that he covered his in ring deficiencies by doing insane shit. You had guys like RVD and Mick Foley, who even though they made their names doing insane shit, went on to proper stardom because they knew their way around a ring without needing to mutilate their opponent (even if Foley continued to be "hardcore", the fundamentals were always there) and could cut a decent promo, whereas the likes of the Sandman, New Jack and Sabu had nothing to fall back on other than more insane shit.

More money and better TV, no Dixie Carter nor Russo to mess things up either. Though the issue for me might come from some of the talent running the company. They've never done it before, egos tend to come in play when you have active wrestlers booking, and they have a tendency to pander to the hard cores with insider-y type gimmicks and booking.

AEW's money backer is another level beyond TNA's. The Khans own the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL and Fulham FC of English soccer. I don't think WWE ever took TNA seriously. They've tightened down the screws on any of their talent leaving during contracts the past few months in contrast.

This appears to have been the case at their inaugural PPV. Stuff like Cody and Dustin Rhodes putting on a fantastic match alongside a battle royale featuring a wrestler with no legs, a man painted yellow and a transvestite. The latter is not a new thing and has been a very successful gimmick in the past but you generally need a backstory before you bring it out ringside when trying to win new viewers as opposed to the wink and nod crowds.

Jim Ross was saying on Bully Ray's podcast that even third tier talent that barely make it on TV are now on half million dollar contracts just to prevent AEW from poaching them

I have to say Double or Nothing was a fantastic PPV, esp the last three matches. Better than anything WWE have made in ages

As ever. I have interpreted his f**king words by f**king toning it f**king down. fudge!

I loved his description of Exotic Adrian Street, "You knew he could rip your f**king eye out."

Edit: If I can get AEW in the UK, I will give be it a go. I've stopped watching WWE. My three favourite wrestlers, Edge, Christian and CM Punk are long gone and I have little time for endless Brock Lesnar turning up only half the time to stand in the ring smirking whilst Paul Heyman does all the talking.

Still like Bayley.

WWE did have a spate of "wrestlers with jobs" in the 90s. The Goon (ice hockey player), the Repo Man, Spark Plug Bob Holly (NASCAR driver). Strictly speaking, that's how the Undertaker first came in, although he really managed to use the gimmick to take it to another level. Plus he was an amazingly talented wrestler, as wasted by WCW.

TNA was and is filmed in a tv studio. Didn’t matter where it was shown or how good it was, it was never real competition for a Live stadium show like WWE.
