The masses against the (political) classes in Hong Kong

So the CEO of Hong Kong wants to make it easier to extradite 'criminals' to China. Hong Kongers unsurprisingly have said no - I mean the Chinese legal system is an utter joke - with up to 1 million people marching on Sunday and into Monday.

South China Morning Post have a good section devoted to it and why it matters.

China meanwhile is blaming the US for the unrest, because why not?

China has over a billion people. The views of a million are insignificant.

Yea, 14% of the population of the area that still provides a)their main access to the international banking market and b) 3%of their GDP, despite only being .005% of their population is insignificant.

Do you seriously think the Chinese gummint give a rats arse about the views of the people of HK? They would flood the place with their own puppets in a heartbeat and replace any dissenters. It will happen, but the Gummint have time on their side.

"One country two systems" only applies until 2047. The rich own Hong Kong now, just as they always have.

Yes, I do. The Chinese 'gummint' (ffs you're a 50 year old man, why are you using terms like this) aren't fúcking stupid. Hong Kong is their major portal to the western financial markets atmo. I have several friends involved in the area and China cannot afford to do a Tiananmen square in Hong Kong.

At the moment. Give it 15 years and it'll be an entirely different story

Living and working in HK for the past 5 years (and I just commuted without any disruption through Admiralty where the protest is based) and I do think the BBC / Western press are rather over egging the level of protest. Yes, there was a big (but no way 1m people) peaceful march on Sunday (they've had them in London too recently, no?). I worked near Threadneedle Street during the UK student protests of 2010 and I would say it's comparable in numbers - significant but also pretty easy for the government to ignore. Outside of a few city blocks in HK you would not know anything is taking place.

As for the extradition law, it hardly matters. If China wants you, they take you from here. Billionaires from their 4 Seasons suites and booksellers from Mong Kok. They just disappear without the legal process. The two systems is little more than window dressing when it comes to the crunch. This was a British colony until 1997 and it has been a Chinese colony ever since. There are a hardcore of idealist HK students who hold an unrealistic dream of independence but a huge proportion of the city are pro-Beijing and the rest are just scraping a living.

Of course Hong Kongers are late risers even when they have jobs and students are worse still, so there is every chance my commute was undisturbed because the lazy sods were still in bed. Will go for a walkabout at lunch and see if things have grown.

this will get very messy...and if I hear one more claim that the protestors are "peaceful", I swear I'll shoot the fuckers myslef. Numerous videos are circulating with protestors preparing bricks, pipes, spears and even petrol bombs in order to 'peacefully express their discontent over the proposed change to the law.

Whilst I sympathise with their concerns, their means are not peaceful

Are they insane? This is the peoples republic of china they are messing with, or are they embolden by the fact that its hongkong and most of world media will be keeping an eye on things, unlike in contrast say in the depths of the PRC, tibet or the western parts of the country with the ethnic and religious groups there?

cheers. It's going to be a tough old slog as the Govt are being incredibly stubborn (more than usual) and cannot see why people are so pissed off. The protesters have been emboldened to take control and have vowed to stay until the bill is shelved.

I hope the videos of violence are not being faked. Easy to do these days. Has there been any violence in the streets of Hong Kong since the Star Ferry riots?

It really sounds totally out of character as a generalisation. Is there the possibility that there is some skullduggery going on, by forces sympathetic to the Party?

they are not fake, nor were the 15 stitches suffered by an officer mate on Sunday night.

Has there been violence since the Star ferry riots? Have a think back to the umbrella movement from a couple of years back

It is definitely growing in numbers. At lunch I walked through and it was still confined to Admiralty govt buildings but this evening's commute has seen clumps of kids in black t shirts congregating in Central. I think they may well be waiting for dusk to fall. Occupy 2.0 in Central perhaps. It will get them nowhere.

Sorry about my post, it comes across as a bit glib in light of the injury your mate suffered. I have removed it.

I didn't know that. What happened to the famed Asian work ethic. I remember staying at a friend's place in Midlevels once and the neighbours seemed to jibber jabber all night.
Maybe that's the problem. Up too late and not morning people. The work ethic is a myth as far as I can see (or perhaps it was the prior generation).

China would never let them. But regardless, its way more complicated than that. Hong Kong itself belonged to the UK, but the New Territories were a 99 year lease. They never belonged to the UK, they were just rented. Hong Kong expanded so much that it became impossible to separate properly from the new territories. Hence the call just to hand the lot back in 1997.

Aye. Agree but if you’re going to have a vlog and complain about distortion of the truth and then play fancy with ‘facts’ yourself, you look a bit of a tot
