Yeah its hard to tell if hes got more about him than just smashing it. Given Englands top order No. 5 usually has to dig in

I seem to recall the pommy press wrote that side up, pre-series, as the worst Aust team ever.

Pity they couldn't get Steve Waugh out until the third test.

Can someone remind me what his series average was at that point?
My recollection was primarily whether Enhland should be picking Gower because we didn't have a left hander without him and our batting looked weak.

Gower or not our batting was appalling in that series and our bowling was worse

EDIT ...flights and accommodation sorted and looking forward to my first Ashes test match at Lords. Hope it's a close contest, with both teams still in it on Day 4 and 5 #fingerscrossed

Day 4 & 5 at Lord's eh? Edinburgh is nice. Possibly Cornwall. If you want to see some cricket, there is a full list of fixtures in the County Championship on the Sunday. Canterbury is a lovely ground for Kent vs Essex.

It's lucky I don't speak Italian or I might have been offended by that.

Serious answer - London in August at short notice - just see what you can find and be prepared to pay an arm and a leg. AirB&B is probably your best bet. Given the low likelihood of play on day 5 (if not day 4), I wouldn't worry about being too close to the ground and have some contingency plans.

Mike Selvey made a good argument for retaining Ali as a bowler. Left arm off spin is not ideal for comating the Aussie left handers. Right arm off has a statistically the best chance against them... but....
As we all know, Swann was death incarnate to left handers, but Ali isn't Swann. He isn't even a fucking cygnet. Picking a bowler because other bowlers of the same style are effective is a selection policy that even the 90's England teams would have laughed at.
Exactly. "But left handers!" is pointless when you're bowling full tossers and rank long hops. He took 2-130 on a very helpful wicket, against all those left handers. That isn't to say Leach will fare any better, but it's entirely obvious to everyone except people like Selvey that Moeen needs to go away for a while. There's nothing he's doing well right now.

On the heels of Stone's injury, Lewis Gregory is broken too. Jesus. Are they sharing training time with the England rugby team?
There was a great programme on radio 4 a couple of months back (it may even have been a repeat) about Jimmy and the "improvements" that Duncan Fletcher and his bowling coaches tried to make to his bowling action. I know this is a well known story, but to hear Jimmy himself say that it left him injured, with no idea how he was supposed to bowl and on the verge of quitting the game really brought home to me the risks of coaches (in any sport) who really don't know what they are doing.

The positive aspect of this was the programme also talked about the much more scientific approach they now take and the use of biomechanical experts and videos Nevertheless, whenever I hear about an injury (cricket or rugby) which wasn't obviously the result of an in game event, I now think "was that because of some idiot coach?"
Ian Pont and Cath Dalton do some great stuff on the biomechanical frameworks for fast bowler (for bowling fast and for avoiding injury).

This is a very goid point and applies to batting too. Steve Smith being a prime example. He was lucky enough not to have his unorthodox and quirky batting style not coached out of him -- intentionally too. There's plenty of press about the deliberate decision to just let him do it his way and working with it.

As far as Mooen goes, it was interesting to note the commentators explain that he delivers seemingly randomly with his elbow out, chicken wing style, or tucked in, conventional style. Asked about it, he reportedly said elbow out is his natural style and it still comes out unintentionally sometimes but he's trying to adapt to the orthodox style they're trying to coach into him

I'm short, I suspect you're on to a strong point.

Real shame about the rain - feel especially bad for those with tickets who would have been anticipating today for so long.

And England would have been about 147 - 1 by now :((

What happens when rain rights off an entire day? The first day at that? Do they add another day on the end, or is this just now a 4-day Test?

Rain forecast after lunch on Friday.

Lose a whole day to rain, more time sure to be lost in the coming days. Start time today: still 11am

I've got some rather decent beers lined up already. Remember, you can take a reasonable amount of booze into Lord's, especially if you're going with someone who doesn't really drink😎.
