I can only see it at discriminating against those who don’t have some legal form of ID, which is fair enough.

I wonder what demographics those people might be.

I mean it's not like voter ID has long been used for voter supression elsewhere, and even to an extent in Northern Ireland has it?

Outside of your bubble there are people without driving licenses and passports.

Actual cases of voter fraud are very limited.

A huge number (comparatively) of people don't have photo ID.

I understand there will be a new free form of ID made available, which should be of general usefulness if you don’t have one of the currently available formats.

What are legal forms of id?

I did not think we had any mandated items of id tbh.

Passports if you travel abroad, not everyone does. Driving license if you drive, not everyone does.
For the record if you need id to vote then there should be a national id scheme.
Seeks fair to me.

Areas where voter ID has been trialed had voter cards issued , this of course wouldn’t be too difficult.

Laugh at the lefties pretending this isn’t about voter fraud.

Wouldn’t have a problem with a national ID, plenty of other countries have it - proof of ID doesn’t have to be a driving licence or passport which those poor disenfranchised people have to pay for , could be something they get for free like a NI card or tenancy document or even a JSA or benefits book.

Nobody is suggesting ability to pay for something should affect ability to vote , those who don’t have or won’t have interest to obtain some form of free ID probably have something to hide and shouldn’t really get a vote perhaps ?

That you'll have to go out of your way to apply for. It's still going to be a barrier for a large number of people.

Now it's easy to say, that's thier fault. But making it harder to vote in such a sweeping way when there is such a low level of impersonation fraud just isn't the answer for me.

Nearly all the cases of proven voter fraud relate to postal votes after the regulations were massively relaxed.

No more than going out of your way to vote - spare me the bleeding heart sob story, anyone legal would already have some form of ID already so stop inventing barriers to add to corbyns already divisive language , he is just worried tower hamlets may not still be labour once the fraud is excluded

This is posturing nonsense from Corbyn as usual - he knows there will be new free forms of ID available. A much greater issue is the substantial number of people who do not even register to vote, but of course he is more interested in opposing sensible ideas than coming up with anything tangible. Tbf, his approach was the same when Labour were in power.

You already have to "go out of your way" to register.

I am not sure this is needed but voting regs are pretty lax in this country.

Think we should do the old finger dipped in ink at the voting station.

Free ID isn't free, below that you have to pay for the documents (such as a birth certificate) which allow you get to that ID in the first place.

There's a barrier to entry even with free voter IDs - it's an opportunity cost and one where the poorer you are, the harder it is. Offering them free is a good idea, but even so...

This isn't a made up problem. It's a fairly well known issue, given the USA has been fighting over this for a while. Studies show that poorer and disadvantaged people are less likely to have ID, less likely to be able to get ID, and less likely to vote as a result. There's also no actual problem that's being solved here.

So to sum up, voter ID:

1) Doesn't fix any real-world issue
2) Does have a disproportionate impact on the poor

Legislation proposed says photo ID so, NI card, tenancy doc, JSA or benefits book all ruled out.

3.5 million adults in the UK don't have either a passport or driving license.

We're talking about 3.5 million people (7.5% of the electorate) not having access to an appropriate form of ID.

How much will cost to administer and issue all these free ID cards? The evidence of widespread impersonation fraud just isn't there to justify this at the moment imo.

figures from the Electoral Commission show there were just 28 allegations of impersonation last year our of nearly 45 million votes in 2017 – or one case for every 1.6 million votes cast. Only one of these allegations resulted in a conviction.

I always found it weird how lax the voting process is. They only ask your name and address. So you could go and cast a vote as anyone! And this is not an issue? Come on.

Madey-uppey hand-waving about how it must be happening, with no evidence to back it up, isn't crime. It's just right wing fever dreams.
