Actually, it's a repeated claim throughout history with some primary/secondary sources (i.e. he didn't just make it up himself). However, it's fairly obviously an inflated number as there simply wasn't that many people in that region.
Yes, as with the other examples he used that’s surely his point; the tendency towards using oft-repeated but not necessarily accurate statistics?

Anyway, more fun with ages:

- The founding of Oxford University predates the Aztec empire by 200 years
- Less time separates us from Cleopatra than she was to the building of the great pyramids at Giza.
- And, on an even greater scale, less time separates us from T-Rex, than the T-Rex was to the stegosaurus.

That would have had Nishapurs’ population being about 7% of the worlds population at the time! In the real world the population would have been a 10th to a 100th of that, and the massacre occurred over 10 days, not 1 hour.

Don’t trust Groucho with numbers.
It also means killing 29,133 people per minute, which frankly would be pants now, let alone then

“ And what of the dead? I own that I thought of myself, at times, almost as dead. Are they not locked below ground in chambers smaller than mine was, in their millions of millions? There is no category of human activity in which the dead do not outnumber the living many times over. Most beautiful children are dead. Most soldiers, most cowards. The fairest women and the most learned men – all are dead. Their bodies repose in caskets, in sarcophagi, beneath arches of rude stone, everywhere under the earth. Their spirits haunt our minds, ears pressed to the bones of our foreheads. Who can say how intently they listen as we speak, or for what word? ”

Some more numbers for you, Jeffrey.

- 250,000 deaths per year are due to medical error in the US
- That's the third highest cause of death (beating out repiratory disease and cigarettes)

For much of human history, medical practice killed more people than it saved.
What year did that change?: show
Sometime in the 1920s*

So probably less than a hundred years ago.

I think that is a bit vague though. For example, 150 years ago something as routine as appendicitis was a death sentence. So of course they would try and cut it out. A 1% chance of living is better than no chance.

Okay, Euler's identity. When I was a sprog studying arithmetic there was one fact that made me leap back in surprise.

e^pi = −1

What. The. Fcuk? How can that be? How can e [the unique number whose natural logarithm is equal to one] be related to pi [we all know what pi is] in that way. Is God playing tricks with us here? Thankfully, I found I wasn't alone in that response.

I would mind just lasting 30 minutes at the sex thing, let alone the the orgasm.

According to a survey, Australian men have the 4th highest duration of sex

“Across the entire surveyed age range, Australian's are above the international average, especially at age 45 and above, at 16 minutes and 34 seconds.”

Apparently the Mormon Church maintains the most comprehensive data base of the population, past and present.

You might be amused, or something, to learn that you have, in all likelihood, been baptised by the buggers, and so have all your ancestors.

I have lost count of the number of idiots I’ve had to school with the ‘more people alive today than ever lives’ claim. It’s actually a very good indicator of misplaced belief of intelligence along with any of these statements..

You could fit the whole world on the Isle of White
The average person swallows 8 spiders whilst sleeping in their lifetime
In the Southern Henisphere toilets flush the other way due to the Coriolus effect
Eating increases the risk of cramping while swimming
You’re never more than 6ft from a rat
The Great Wall of China is the only man made object visible from Space
You only use 10% of your brain
Should never wake someone sleepwalking - it’s dangerous
It’s illegal to have chewing gum in Singapore and is punishable by cane.
Talking of chewing gum if you swallow it stays in your digestive system for 7 years
Your hair and nails keep growing when you die

I’ve not heard the first one, you could fit the worlds population on the Isle of Wight. Isle of Wight is 380 square km’s, or 380 million square meters. Assuming you can fit 10 people per square meter then you could fit over half the worlds population on it. If you laid them down sardines style and stacked them, you probably could fit all of them. Although it might be a public relations nightmare.

This is one of the strangest urban myths ever. Our deceased grand-parents, or great grand-parents, alone cover over half our population. Given we’ve been around for about 60,000 years, or around 3,000 generations, it’s not hard to deduce that we have a lot more ancestors than the current population.
