Aussie 7s get need for speed in Trae Williams
      22 May

The Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens team has announced a major signing in Australian speedster Trae Williams who has committed to the program until 2021.

Williams is a welcome boost for the Australian Sevens and their desire for more speed as Tim Walsh continues to build his squad for the 2019-2020 season.

Part of Australia’s Track and Field team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Williams is the fourth fastest Australian of all time, with a personal best of 10.1 seconds clocked on 16 February 2018 at the 2018 National Athletics Championships on the Gold Coast.

As a junior, Williams played Rugby for St John’s Anglican School, Brisbane and played Rugby League for Souths Acacia Ridge.

Williams will travel to London with the squad as an observer ahead of Australia’s campaign at the penultimate round of the HSBC Sevens World Series.

Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens Head Coach, Tim Walsh said: “Trae is an exciting athlete to be joining the Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens program and we are looking forward to getting him into the program. “We’ve identified that a key area we need to improve on is adding more speed to our squad and Trae is the combination of speed and physical ability.

“Physically he is excellent condition to convert into Sevens and what he will potentially offer us in terms of speed out wide will add to what we offer on the World stage.

“Players with sprinting backgrounds have made excellent converts to the game such as the USA’s Perry Baker and Carlin Isles as well as our very own Ellia Green and we believe Trae’s transfer will be just as successful.

“He’s been a talented Rugby and Rugby League player in the past and I know he is looking forward to throwing himself into Sevens and mixing it with some of the best athletes in the world.”

Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens player Trae Williams said: “I’m really excited about this new adventure with the Aussie 7s. “I’ve always loved Rugby and to be able to potentially chase an Olympic Dream is through Rugby is something I never expected but I want to grab this opportunity with both hands.

“The World Series is an exciting competition and after talking to Tim (Walsh) I really felt passionately about where this team is going and its ambitions.

“I can’t wait to meet the boys and get stuck into some hard work.”

Never heard of St John’s and dunno that it's a rugby program type of school. He's a pocket rocket, but you can't coach speed!

Let's hope it works out for him. The Aus team certainly needs something extra right now.

He's no Pierre Spies who once ran 100m in bare feet in 8.6 seconds while completing a school science report at the same time.

at least hes stocky he will need it on defense, i can just see him trying to defend against some of those monster samoan and fijian forwards.

He needs to grow a beard and dye all his hair reddish brown so his series nickname can be Gimli.

Hows his knees? - many quad monsters find suddenly changing direction laterally is an injury waiting to happen.

I'd like to him & Luke McAlister have a Quad off to determine who is the real Quadzilla and who is a mere Quad Cooper.

We've been lacking a pure pace merchant for a long time in 7s. Can be make or break. Let's hope he makes the transition well.

Short stocky RBs can be pretty good in the NFL. Tarik Cohen is 5’6”.

yeah MJD was 5.7 but short and stocky seems to be the body type most prevalent you would be hard pressed to find many over 6.2/6.3, low center of gravity seems to be important in the postion, and a the shortest shelf life of any position.

beastmode is 5.11,

Laumape and nonu might of made good RBs not sure if SBW would of cut it there, maybe a LB or big receiver. IF i think could of made a good WR.

That's just not true, not true at all.

You're thinking of AB de Villiers.

Just saw this, his HS rugby highlights.

Can actually step and break tackles, different to a straight sprinter conversion.

That's why I never believe those 10 second schoolboy sprint times you read about players like Lomu/Howlett/some 130kg Fijian barefoot prop. When you see the difference between rugby fast and genuine sprinter fast, it's light years apart. It's like comparing AB De Villiers to an actual scientist.

similar running style to Shane Williams and a bit of Delasau thrown in.....can't say much about his speed, bar Isles, haven't seen anyone run that fast with mid-steps ..

My club used to play in the conference university games (basically an excuse to travel somewhere and get drunk) but each year we'd get some rings in. Guys who played for other clubs but went to uni, league players, Aussie Rules players ect who wanted to play in the games.

I remember one year there was this bloke who came down. Played a bit of rugby as a kid but nothing at high school. He was borderline when it came to representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games or some shit before getting an injury. That's what he told us. Whatever, dickhead. We all tell lies. We told him to come down to training anyway. Guy rocked up in an old Brisbane Broncos league jersey and a pair of silky running shorts. During the drills we noticed 2 things:

1. He was very, very farken quick.

2. He had feet for hands.

He played a few warm up games for us and scored a couple of tries but could only run with the ball if you physically wedged it under his arm. A simple pass would be dropped. He couldn't pick up the ball if it was rolling to him and he never, ever caught a high kick. I once stayed with him after training and punted high ball after high ball at him until it felt like my leg was going to tear off at the groin. He didn't catch one. He seemed to either try and catch the ball with his forearms or chest or, on the odd occasion, with his noggin. Never his hands.

I'd kick the ball up...."Here! Catch this one"

*FOOOMP*

I GOT IT, IT GOT IT...MINE...

*DOINNNNG*

fudge.

But, if he was able to somehow have the ball affixed to his person, he couldn't be caught. Guys would get a hand to him but he'd be moving too fast. I always wondered if he needed glasses. He really could have been a great player. A demon in defence too. He'd mow everyone down.

Rapid, but actually has power to break tackles. A good combo for 7s, let's hope he can pass and tackle as well.

Makes a covering tackle in the footage. He's a fair bit further ahead than Isles when he started.

Throws a nice dummy but you don't need to pass when you can burn opposition for pace.
