Re: Ozzie election thread mk II

It will be interesting to see how Bandt works with no power and little voice for the next few years sitting next to Clive Palmer He'll be lucky to get a word in. However, he appears to have the best ground game in Australian politics. What he achieved was f**king impressive. You'd have to back him ...

The Greens lost, what, 2% of their primary vote? Given Bob Brown retired, and they chose to elect Milne in his place it's hardly surprising. . It appears the Greens lost 25% of their primary vote. That's huge, HUGE, HUGE The Palmer Party is rivaling them as the 'third' party. Only dodgy preference ...

I know two people who are happy Abbott has been elected. One is a creationist, the other is a Catholic who speaks with an American accent for reasons best known to himself. Were they former Green voters? I know loads of others who are happy that the ALP are gone. They were simply hated by so many. ...

I'm not sure where the Greens' vote disappeared to. It obviously didn't go to the ALP. Palmer got a spike as did the Libs. Is it possible that hundreds of thousands of Greens realised that being a hippy/commie/joke-shop isn't the way and that business, rather than Govt, drives the good times? But th...

Re: Ozzie election thread mk II

Calling this a landslide just highlights the major flaw in Australia's election system (disproportionality) Yes the Coalition won a lot of seats, but they didn't get that much support from voters. A party that wins only 45% of votes shouldn't get 60% of the seats. And really for the Greens to get 8...

I'm not sure that's evidence of history. It's evidence of culture and anthropology. But most definitions of history centre around a narrative of events. Without a written language it's hard to argue that Australia has a 40,000 year history. That's a nice point, and well made, but I doubt it was the...
