Re: David Moffett: cut Super Rugby back down to 12 teams
Still don't believe that Aus and NZ 'need' anyone else to have a sustainable comp. The idea that there isn't enough money in the Australasian market never seems to be backed with any hard data, just hand-waving. If Aus + NZ can support ten pro soccer franchises then NZ + Aus they can do the same for...

Re: Which sports have their GOAT currently active?
Clayton Kershaw is on track, most dominant athlete in the world right now. He's not as good as Arrieta at the moment. If Pujols holds up until past 40 he could overtake Bonds HR record too. He's on a different planet. K/B ratio of 22, WHIP of 0.7..he's ahead in almost every meaningful category ERA?...

More to sports than the NFL. The Dodgers alone get close to 4M through the gate each season. Pretty serious stuff.Ghost-Of-Nepia wrote:The city which struggles to hold onto an NFL franchise due to the general apathy of its residents? Nah.bobbybobson wrote:London or NY. LA would also be up there.

Re: 2016 Super Rugby NZ Conference Thread
One thing that arises out of this discussion is the frequent reference to SR franchises, 'stealing' players from another ie: Whitelock, Laulala and Bird. It's not easy for us to sometimes put our petty provincial parochialisms aside. I recall the uproar when Justin Marshall and Jeff Wilson 'went No...

Wonder what the actual salaries are, less sponsorship? Compared to say, MLB, where the mean salary is $4M, cricket has a loong way to go as well (if there is anywhere to actually go).

Given the links between the cartels, police, military and various levels government, it doesn't seem that violence in Mexico is something that can be 'controlled' as may be possible elsewhere

Re: English franchises?
Franchises will never happen in English rugby. It will require clubs voting themselves out of top tier existence and the owners ceding power to the RFU. Absolute non-starter. It wouldn't really though would it. They could and probably should introduce a franchise, i.e. license system, into the top ...

Re: English franchises?
Well being a club and a franchise are not mutually exclusive (in fact it is pretty clear that the former doesn't really mean anything at all), and it seems entirely reasonable that the top tier of English rugby could be cut by a couple of teams with a license-based system introduced. Easy

Re: Cockers: "Cancel summer tours to SH or I will kill playe
Summer/autumn tours every year are overkill. Would rather an alternating pattern of SH -> NH one year, NH -> SH the next. If there were more competitive nations and a wider range of destinations, then I would see the value in doing it annually, but as it stands there are too many of these tour match...

Re: Canterbury Rugby's culture of success
Someone mentioned the CC earlier and the run of Northern Transvaal (now Blue Bulls). You have to take into account the fact that that was in the amateur era. I think it is much more difficult to achieve that in the Pro era. Besides, as an outsider, I would say that the Crusaders' SR success is more...

Re: Canterbury Rugby's culture of success
It's impressive, but hardly an unheard of run of success, and lets not pretend that the ITM Cup is equivalent to the NPC Div. 1 of old. It is what it is. Back in the days of the NPC the standard may have been higher, but teams had access to their ABs. The playing field is level for all the province...

Almost no general buzz/atmosphere compared to NZ in 2011.
The rugby's been good, but the lack of promotion, coupled with the fact that about 90% of England's population didn't seem to care in the first place, has made it a bit of a damp squib for me.

French clubs don't "develop" international rugby players, certainly not those from the Pacific Islands. They pay them - that's it. Take Fiji, for example. How many of their RWC squad members were "developed" by European clubs? Point out the ones who didn't learn to play rugby in Fijian, NZ and Aust...

Big teams protected. Small teams penalized. It was ever thus. Do England still have a team QC? Case where a big team got nothing for eye gouging? I'm not sure you and Nui have got the hang of this one. If it helps, the problem isn't we think 9 weeks is too long for gouging. It's that we are at unco...
