n When I did my A levels in 1976 London medical schools were asking for BBC, Cardiff BBB, don’t know about the rest of the UK, but I guess was similar. The current crop of students with 4 As are not stupid, but they don’t strike me as super geniuses. Where were Burke and Hare when you needed them? ...

Only an anecdote, but I heard that some University maths courses found that the A grade at A level mathematicians in recent years were not up to the first year syllabus, and they had to make it easier.

Its a good thing IMO. However welsh language teaching at schools in my experience is desultory, and largely just paying lip service. Also it's mandatory and a lot of kids resent it, they don't see as being particularly useful. There needs to be rethink on how to promote it. A similar issue to Māori...
