Re: Ye Official Calcutta Cuppe ffred

Marler throw should have been fine. It was badly executed. Both players messed up but it didn’t need a hooker to get it right. We’ll enjoy an flukey undeserved win if that’s ok. We’ve played much better and lost when we might not have. Winning badly is good. Now we have to be clinical with wales. Or...

FWIW the weather forecast has improved. Gales and heavy rain to pass earlier. Still pretty windy and showers though. Just less of a lottery now.

Let's face it, both teams have been rather good a meltdowns in the last few years. We should replace the ref with a therapist.

Re: Match thread: Scotland v Boks - Saturday, November 13

Was Aus his 1st match of the season? I think so. Shows his quality that he was more than a match for Pocock. But it was rare to see him subbed and GThas indicated he wanted him for the end of the match rather than the ‘start’. As long as they still try to get the ball away from the breakdown. Hainin...

Re: Jeff's All New and Frustrated Lions Ratings v SA (Test 3)

What's the story of Hogg at Exeter? Is the official line him being rested Officially he was dropped. Baxter even talked about Hogg’s reaction to it being positive. Not sure if the Exeter situation and the Lions form were linked though. Or rather, his Exeter form may have partly related to his stres...

Re: Jeff's All New and Frustrated Lions Ratings v SA (Test 3)

Given how far out it was, there’d have been chasers. And a decent take and give from Williams would have put him in a decent place as a support runner if needed.

It was a huge error either way.

Re: Jeff's All New and Frustrated Lions Ratings v SA (Test 3)

Thought Aki did quite well. Up there with Henshaw. Both perhaps a 6 tho. Similarly, DVM probably played the best for a winger in the test series (DWFP). But no better than a 5. For him, Murray was generally sharp and quick when he came on. He can do it. Makes you wonder…. Curry a 3 or 4. [Jock mode]...

Agreed on lack of options. I won't promote his qualities, and I called for him to resign after the RWC, but Townsend has an obvious 'affinity' with the Lions. That might be in his favour.

Re: Official Match Thread: BIL vs Springboks - Decider - 7th August

Look for DvdM and Aki on the burst around the scrum Given Gatland's penchant for using big fuckers off first phase from deep, I find it amazing that we haven't seen that at all. Would be nice to start seeing them both coming into the 9/10 channel for a short or inside ball, to keep the Bokke blitz ...

Re: The official Lions 2021 thread

Listened to Brian Moore's podcast He said Biggar passed the ball only three times Saturday What a waste of a form player, and a guy like Henshaw who was also in great form before the tour Listening to that I have a light ounce of sympathy for our back 3. Watson did more than enough to get dropped too. Not that either wing was playing the sort of game they're good at. Still does not explain VDM's selection though.

Who takes goal kicks if Biggar is injured? Russel i guess - yikes Murray and Daly can kick too - but neither would you want to kick to win last kick of the game! Van der Merwe is the guy you keep from that back 3. Jesus. Same backrow that was largely absent on Saturday with Simmonds on the bench to "rescue" things scares the shit out of me too. Surely those half back combinations are the wrong way around?

I can only assume they plan to use VDM in a very different way and in a way. He and Owens must be embarrassed. Williams will have to have a good breakfast I think.

Nope. Just think RS and TF worked better and no worse than TF and MT and TF has to start. CS was poor too. I stress though, if WJ is fit the RS is dropped. Just thinking about what to do if RS has to play. As for DTM’s kick, it was a careless swing at loose ball. Not a trip. Worth a YC but nothing m...

Re: Jeff's All New And Nervous Lions Ratings v SA (Test 2)

Surely the only backs to score more than 4 were the centres. And at least DVM went looking for work unlike Watson. Both 3 with Hogg. But The wingers may survive as the tactics were so awful that they had little chance to do what they’re good at. Hogg does not have that excuse. Half backs were woeful...

Re: Official Match Thread: BIL vs Springboks

Strikes me that today was screaming out for someone to keep the SA 3/4 line honest. The early tackle on Daly was symptomatic and nothing to do with him. 10 standing a mile back and lobbing a pass to the 13. Russell / Smith may not be the answer to anything and his place kicking is variable, but we n...

Re: The official Lions 2021 thread

I’m not proposing this particularly but Hogg can cover 10. In fact Townsend started him there bs Italy. For the Lions be the Boks? I wouldn’t have thought so but if it’s to enable a numbers game on the bench… Smith is way better but Hogg is no worse at 10 than Farrell just now.

Not sure they’ll have an out and out lock on the bench. So if AWJ doesn’t start, I think he’ll be watching. Vice versa as it were for Henderson. Surely the 2nd test is more realistic for AWJ in any case. I’d love to see Curry and Watson start. If last night taught WG anything it’s that he needs to g...

I would put Underhill ahead of Navidi on the reserves list. Loads more pace on hard pitches. Ritchie is another who is bound to be in contention. Given that Navidi’s fitness seems to be an issue, I’m not sure why he’d be a reserve, at least until he has shown those concerns to be wrong. Similarly, ...

I'd like to see a midfield of Biggar(10), Henshaw(12), Harris(13). I reckon the only reason Farrell (and Daly probs) is touring is because we might go to 6-2 bench splits at some point. [/non jock mode] I tend to agree. Healy has been functional at best this season. He'd do a holding job but doesn't bring much to the game anymore. Keenan can feel unlucky as he's been as good or better than players who've been selected in other positions, but the reality is he hasn't been as good for as long as Hogg and Williams have been at 15 so there's no complaints there.
