My grandmother lived in Brighton in the 1980s. Her neighbour (and good friend) was Dave Greenfield's mum. Mum was very proud of Dave of course and kept bringing copies of his music for Gran to listen to. She didn't really care for it, but clearly was too polite to be honest about it. This is rather ...

John Gray the Coventry hooker was in the England Sevens World Champions team in the 1970s as both hooker and goal kicker. He later went North to League. In a position with a paucity of candidates for the team, he's a cert. I don't think he ever won a senior international cap, but at least he had int...

Using the pedometer app on my phone to remind me I need to get in plenty of exercise since retirement in late December. I see that I am averaging about 10km per day over the last six months. The consequence is that the waist line has tightened up nicely.

A couple of notable omissions. Keith Fielding had a phenomenal scoring record in League. Not sure of his Union international record, but he was part of the England team that won the Sevens World Cup (along with John Gray, a goal kicking hooker) and Bev Risman changed codes after the 1959 Lions tour.

We had a visit from a Canadian team in 1985 and the players were hosted by rugby players living locally. One of the guys staying with me gave me his old team jersey as a souvenir. That was 1985 and I have no idea how old the jersey was then. The number on the back had frayed away. Admittedly it is n...

I felt Simmonds was rejected too soon. With Curry and Underhill alongside him, most opposition teams are going to be seriously embarrassed by their pace. Vunipola has had his moments, but is too easy to work out. Not many teams can handle him even so.
