Re: quitting the bottle today
Just realised I think I've hit 3 years this week. That's still early days right? Still very much craving the sweet biscuits etc Three years is a pretty impressive achievement and you should be proud of yourself. One of the AA groups that I used to know was fanatical about not counting years, as the...

Re: quitting the bottle today
Not that I've quit permanently like many/most on this thread but I've found that lifestyle changes like eating better and introducing an exercise programme of some sort is very useful as a distraction or a way to occupy myself during periods of cutting down/abstaining. Helps you feel good about you...

Re: quitting the bottle today
I was eating chocolate cake when I made that post... Seems unrelated It is pretty common in my group that people find themselves eating way too many sweet snacks in the early days, probably to keep their mouths busy and minds off booze. Just realised I think I've hit 3 years this week. That's still...

Re: quitting the bottle today
Its been 15 months since I stopped drinking every weekend. This year I've only had a drink on four occasions and each time no more than 3 drinks max. I do find myself craving a drink come Friday, but keeping my body lean plus the threat of hangovers is enough to stop myself. I have been the same we...

Re: quitting the bottle today
I knew I had big probs in my 20's and early thirties with the juice. Cost me friends and relationships. I think that a bottle of wine and two cans of cider every night of the week was the low point. God knows how I functioned. I could smell alcohol in my piss when I went to the loo in the morning. ...

Re: quitting the bottle today
Tomorrow will be 7 years to the day since I quit. For me that's significant because I reckon that I had a serious problem for about the last 6 years of my drinking "career" - so I'm clean for longer than I was out of control. I drank "normally" from about 21 to mid-40s; started to go downhill then,...

FFS, is The Almighty Flog allowed to also stink up this thread as well, with his relentless virtue-signalling? What the f-ck? You're the only one stinking up this thread, you odd little man. Not quite sure what triggered shanky's comment but it does seem somewhat out of place here. Regarding sleep,...

Re: quitting the bottle today
Mate, there's definitely a range of alcoholics. "Alcoholic" does not mean you're lying in the gutter drinking metho. And I'm sorry to say "a couple of bottles of wine" by yourself at home more than qualifies. I'm not trying to be judgemental here, just honest. I'm 100kg and consider myself to have ...

Re: quitting the bottle today
I went 6 months without drinking, to lose weight. Broke my streak over Christmas. That feeling of being even just mildly hungover sucks. For 2025 I am going to see how I go with limiting my consumption rather than cutting it out totally. Plan is to only have a drink if there's a decent reason for i...

Re: quitting the bottle today
At today's AA meeting, I received an award for 20 years sober. I remember the first meeting as if it was yesterday, the words of the group leader at the time piercing my mind and heart: "unless you desire sobriety from the depths of your heart, joining this group will not help you remain sober". The...

Re: quitting the bottle today
Possibly not quite the same……… but I quit candy for 2025. I’ve legitimately got a disorder - I can easily eat none, but a single piece of candy, a biscuit, chocolate, cake, etc. will inevitably result in a binge. I guess it’s the dopamine or something. Hopefully this doesn’t sound weird or patronis...

I guess I am blessed (or cursed?) to not enjoy the taste of alcohol so rarely drink, but my uncle was a terrible alcoholic. Re: Listen to your body
I went to the hospital for a check on my progress and the results of the blood test were across-the-board positive -- the values that needed to decline have declined significantly (the bad cholesterol one the main one) and those that needed to improve had improved. My weight too has dropped to a hea...

62 caveat I'm a smoker and drinker. I had just turned 70, have never smoked, and took my last drink 20 years ago. I am definitely not overweight, do regular exercise, eat healthily, have a low-stress diet, my bp is a wee bit high but not alarmingly so, the same as my cholesterol levels. It seems th...

Glad to read that you are with us Kiwas. Cannot overemphasise how important it is to listen to your own body and to monitor your health. Re: Listen to your body
As I mentioned in a previous post, weird how different surgeons, hospitals, countries approach this as I was not told to do sfa walk dogs straight away (that was extent of what was allowed) then work it up. Poor explanation as the doctor encouraged me to walk for 15~20mins a day and do 15mins on th...

A fresh faced 40. Way to start the decade. Very quickly become experts in our chosen field, though you'd always rather pass on the practical. That makes me feel better as I had just turned 70 a couple of weeks before my surgery. 40 is very young for this but you are now set for a decent long and he...
