OK. Marler improved after putting the weight back on. Cole, ditto. Hughes went backwards after losing weight for Wasps... That's the same heavier Coles who, bar a modest improvement in his last game (and rescinded acclaim from Jake) has been widely derided on here as being a fairly static shadow of...

"Not being fat" is a skill now? It's not a skill but it can be a factor. Excessive weight at some point is clearly going to have a measurable affect on accumulated fatigue and fatigue impacts negatively on motor skills and general performance. It's why Wales and Exeter thought that 'not being fat' ...

This is the same Jamie George who keeps scoring and/or creating tries from chip-throughs? He does and he is unquestionably the best current option for his country, but that doesn't negate the fact that he would be even better if he further improved his physical condition by ditching the deadweight ...

Re: Shouting at the lineouts
It's another hideous development and all refs need to make it absolutely clear that it won't be tolerated. All kinds of variants of this unedifying tactic have been creeping in for a long time, tacitly accepted and even encouraged by coaches. The sport's authorities invariably take a geological age ...

1959 Lions v. BOP-Thames Valley-Counties at Rotorua, 26-24 ... to Terry McLean, easily the best and most enjoyable game of the tour. Then perhaps on the following Saturday the 4th test at Auckland, sitting just beyond the touchline with all the kids under 13, in awe of DB Clarke, and filthy that we...

Just back from walking on the common to watch the sun set at its northernmost point. I do this every year with my wife, and four grown up sons. I know that we've got all summer in front of us, but part of me is sad to think that the nights are drawing in too. On a pedant's point the sun will be set...

Are we basically ok with giving any Irish player a Lions pass on the basis that they beat an undercooked/understrength NZ team last year (before getting hammered by them at home)? Are you referring to POM? England, then the All Braggs now his form on tour has been irresistible. Gats gave Warburton ...

Saw the 1966 Aussies, who left very little imprint, and then the '67 All Blacks ('The Unsmiling Giants'/Wallace Reyburn) who did leave an enormous impression. Watched Scotland shade England 16-15 at Twickenham in 1971. Only a week later the teams met again in a Centenary International at Murrayfield...

First game was Scotland V New Zealand in 1967 sitting in the schoolboy enclosure at Murrayfield. On the 1980 SA tour (recent to me) Stuart Lane severely injured his leg in the first minute of the first game and had to return home. He subsequently never got another Welsh cap, let alone another Lions opportunity. He can still proudly say that he played for the Lions, though.
