Re: 2023 Rugby World Cup Final Match Thread - NZ Vs South Africa
Unfortunately it was pissing down. Played into SA's hands. 'Semi final in the rain - Boks play terribly' 'Previous game where AB's got a red card against Boks (in the dry) - Boks put up a record win' Rains in the final - ' pissing down. Re: Kicking Wins Games
Why do crowds cheer when teams penalty kick for touch and often jeer when kick for the posts is chosen? Nobody wants to see a team sport decided by individual goal kickers. We all know though certain teams would not compete if penalties were worth less. This has nothing to do with the final where N...

The All Blacks would rather die than admit that taking your penalty kicks and dropping goals gets you further than pressing it wide at the biggest tournament of them all.
But it does.

Re: 2023 Rugby World Cup Final Match Thread - NZ Vs South Africa
I have no qualms about SA winning, it is hard to watch really, they pick a massive bunch of players, then fake injuries every stoppage to rest their guys. It’s tactically very smart, good on them. I would much rather see a game without constant stoppages, but completely used to it by now. For exampl...

Re: 2023 Rugby World Cup Final Match Thread - NZ Vs South Africa
I thought it was the right decision in real time. SA were down a man and the ABs were 6 points down. Yep, obviously the correct decision. The match was lost with the two final kicks that were missed, once nz had the try that set up the platform to slot kicks and take the lead. No, no. You set up th...

Re: 2023 Rugby World Cup Final Match Thread - NZ Vs South Africa
I'm talking about the kicks we gave away in preference for going to touch and going for the try when Kolisi was off. This is always the Canes tactic under Savea and it often fails. Ok I see what you mean. Yes, they were relatively easy. Savea is a Hurricanes man, it's in his DNA to go for the try. ...

[quote="Pakia Pakia] In hindsight it wasn't. We just needed two penalties to take it to extra time. Two penalty kicks is better than one try and no conversion. I didn’t read the article, but to me the nauseating teams are the ones who spend 80 minutes whinging to the ref. There are a few.

You never really know what tactics SA will deploy. They could come out and punt bombs for 80 minutes (I hope not). With NZ you mostly know what they are going to bring. One clear advantage NZ have over SA at that is height on the wingers and 3 excellent tactical kickers. It it was the other way arou...

I wouldn’t read into the semi final performance by SA. England dragged them into a kicking dog fight. I can’t see the same happening unless NZ bring back Grant Fox.

Considering Argentina have less depth than NZ and one less day to recover, NZ should have the upper hand on conditioning.

Nothing surprises me with South Africa. I even remember a cricket match a long time ago when the captain walked onto the park with a headset on (connected to the coach I guess). That female trainer gives me the creeps, the fake injuries to rest the big units and relay messages. you can’t police it b...

Yep. As has been pointed out, our back row is critical as is not thinking we can just go wide and run Ireland off their feet, or pull out the dinky kicks and bombs. Without an optimally functionating back row and a coherent and committed chase of timely and accurate kicks , all that will simply pla...

Ireland will play their natural game which is successfully tried and tested. NZ cannot play their natural game because they know it does not work against Ireland. I'm sure NZ have a great plan to counter Ireland on the training pitch, they will need some fortune on to pull it off in the heat of a QF...

I wonder if Ireland were taking quick taps today to keep their set piece plays under wraps or to save the front rowers any potential injuries? It will come down to who makes less mistakes and who converts off set piece. I see this Irish side more composed, like a machine as many have said already. I...

Our QF prospects are very dependent on the opposition tactics and the intent of of the match official . Yes, it's unfortunate that the refs 50/50 calls sway so many matches and often favours the side whos tactic is to slow down the game.

Surprised to see so many first team NZ players on for the majority of the match. Good for the confidence. Some tricky decisions for the big games, surely the coaches will need to start picking on form. Roigard deserves run in the first team, I hope he starts against Italy. Jordan at fullback. A benc...

Why were Foleys team mates screaming at him to kick? It’s of course a rhetorical question and just proves the ref was not the only one who noticed Foley cheating.

NZ like a game that flows and is not stop start. Last week everything just played into Irish hands. If they lose next week it will be 5 losses from the last 9 games and 4 losses from the last 5. Even 3 losses from 5 is already unacceptable if they win next week. Nz underdone playing touch rugby (super rugby) the past few years. South African teams used to bring a similar physicality to NH sides but now NZ face a future of friendly matches against their friends and family.
