Re: Climate change

I’ll ask again in a different way: If I need 1GW of power, what capacity do I need to install for: a) Nuclear/coal? b) wind/solar You can use any nominal values for each that you wish, but once a week the solar/wind only provides 5% of its total capacity due to weather conditions for 6 hours. The f...

Re: Climate change

Wait. So if we need a certain amount of power at any time of the day, and a power source provides this level of power on average, it’s not actually relevant if the power generated is less than what we need for some of the time? I'm not sure I even understand what you're asking. I’ll ask again in a ...

Average? Isn’t minimum what matters? No - the minimum for all these sources is zero. Your fixation with Max power is blinding you to the fundamentals of electricity generation - which is that you pay for electrical energy produced not power. This is what LCOE uses and this is what electricity consu...

Some ugly numbers from the ONS last week on the latest balance of trade numbers, probably lost in all the noise about Ukraine. Total imports of goods increased by £4.7 billion (11.0%) in January 2022, because of increasing imports from EU countries, while imports from non-EU countries remained at si...

You keep talking about profits like it’s relevant. No one is talking about profits - it’s about turnover. I'm talking about the scale of the 'problem' and the scale of the proposed 'solution'. Try to move past thinking "cool let's just tax banks so the rest can live happily and not have to pay any ...

I’m not saying the Guy Smiley model is foolproof, but I’m not sure you realise how many transactions occur each day. The number of transactions is largely notional - but it doesn't really matter. Adding a "small tax" (Guy Smiley's words) on an activity that currently generates $170B in profits glob...

I've never bothered to try and find out how much money is transacted by banks on a daily basis so I'm just speculating wildly... I reckon a percentage, and a small one. The idea was to simply remove all levies and taxes, replacing them all with a small surcharge or levy on every money movement carried out by the banks. What's not to like? That they only can do 150 cycles before needing to be recycled. Lithium iron phosphate can do 3000. Re: RIP the internal combustion engine!

Dont know how you made this conclusion. Capacity factor is surely important, but cost of green hydrogen is 60-70% made from costs of renewable electricity and 30-40% capex (and other fixed costs which are impacted by capacity factor). So no - a capacity factor of 1/3 does not triple the cost of pro...

Essentially, you're saying it's not worth the effort because no-one is making an effort. Eh I don't think I agree even if I was sure what your point is. Should we be producing more green hydrogen? Absolutely - f*ckloads more and ASAP - current chemical/industrial consumption of hydrogen causes sign...

Re: RIP the internal combustion engine!

The two are not mutually exclusive. There is no reason we shouldn't displace grey (and blue) hydrogen with green. There is also no reason we should not be looking to displace oil based fuels with green hydrogen (like trucks, ferries, etc.). The production of green hydrogen is extremely limited - ab...

Sure it’s not massively efficient to convert but RE from wind and solar is so cheap that it’s not really an issue. The sums just don't work out. Electricity is cheap for about a third of the day in most countries with significant renewable inputs. Electrolysis plants are capital intensive and are b...
